dumped the spare tire
#21

My owner's manual warns that the tread depth on the spare is the same as the OEM tire and that it should be replaced in time. The reference to tire tread depth leads me to understand that when it has worn down to below a safe limit it should be replaced.

Porsche is saying that the spare can be used many times.

that's very interesting - clearly i am now going to have to look into this quite a bit farther to see what the deal is with this paricular spare

things to consider - how old is that tire? would you put a 12 year old tire on any other place on the car?

given the likely nature of the construction of the tire (to allow it to accordian down), and the clear warnings on other emergency spares about speeds and such, the tread is not likely to last long in perfect conditions, so depending on how far you go, how hot it got, and how much tread is left...............

if your spare, which is much smaller and, form a handling and braking perspective, less safe already, is then in worn, or perhaps compromised condition, are you willing to risk a blow out there?

Here is what the owners manual has to say about the spare.

replace it in time - love that - no, i think i'll wait for it to blow and force me into a ditch spilling my coffee, interrupting my cell phone, making me lose my place in my newpaper, and totaling my car before i think about changing it

i'm gonna dig mine out and poke around and see what i can find out about it
