gotta go look at the new targa
#1

so, i'm all set to order the new M4 convertible once we get into the next tax year. love the car. does everything i want, even though it's really a sedan. i would keep the 968 at that point, at least for the foreseeable future.

driving yesterday, having a blast with the 968, i saw the new 911 targa. i've looked it up. specs look good. pics look good. liked it in person. rear seats fold down and everything, just like the M4.

gonna go look today and probably drive it. this may change everything

Are you actually implying that you might choose the 911 over the M4? That could mean that you are getting rid of the dangerous illness, called Clarkson Desease!

lol - could be. hard to deny the practicality of the M4. but, i have a real aversion to driving a sedan, no matter how many steroids they feed it.

again, going to really have to look at it. won't even consider the convertible (ugly) or the hardtop (roof has to open up). i still have to deal with the realities of occasionally transporting a large dog, and the very real issues of being able to carry our stuff on a road trip. gotta be able to get the golf clubs and wine in there or it's a no-go.

we'll see. should prove to be a fun day regardless

Should have taken you to the Porsche area at the show, they had a nice Targa there. It wouldn't have the same storage space as the M4, the back seats are no where near the size of the M4, the frunk is probably about the same as the trunk in the M4 space wise, just different shape. The GTS Targa should be out for the 2016 model year. You can order it with model designation delete, just can't order it without the badge.

Those cars both weigh nearly 2 tons, really surprised that they interest you. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

And it still looks like an upside down bathtub, or, a pregnant frog. Sorry fans of 911s, I calls them as I sees them :-) .

nope. under 3500lbs for the 4S. given what my car currently weighs (sound deadening, stereo, bracing, yada yada) it's not that big of a jump.

i get what you're saying though. when i was on the quest for a light car, and i had mine down well under 3k, a 3500lb car would be heavy by comparison. however, now that i am not interested in a stripped out rattle box, and i really am focused on creature comforts, my willingness to accept the weight changes.

my needs are much the same as when i was looking for the 968. sporty GT with all the bells and whistles, and able to carry 2 sets of golf clubs, 2 cases of wine, luggage, and the wife. i no longer am interested in a manual trans, and may be willing to give up on the engine location, but only because of 4WD.

we'll see

I think inquiring minds want to know how you feel about reversing your strong opinion against the 911 after all these years. I see little evidence of you mellowing so is it just convenience or has there been a revelation?

well...............

it remains to be seen that i reverse my opinion. i never like the looks of any of them (except the 996 turbo). i never fit in side them well. they were always behind the times on technology. practicality was zip. i didn't like the way they drove.

i am only considering the 4WD drive version, so the driving aspect may be ok. i like the looks a lot better, but need to investigate further to see if i REALLY like it or not. i also have to sit in it to see if i like the fit. technology has really stepped up and now they have most if not all of the bells and whistles the X5 has, which have become a big deal to me. i'll see how practical it can be when i see it.

at this point, it has my curiosity peaked. now i get to go investigate and see if i throw it on the heap of other 911s, or if it finally stands out to me as a viable car.

That's a second gen RX-7 convertible underneath all that high performance plastic.

I saw the new 911 Targa at the LA Auto Show - it does look damn good.

I like the looks of the new Targa but after watching the video of the top opening/closing, that has set the bar at a new height for German over-engineering...and that bar was already sky high.
