gotta go look at the new targa
#21

Although not a drop-top, this is the coolest new car I've seen in a LONG time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRubofSy7jE

saw it at the car show. hated it. i think the new front end sucks. way to big and square. the previous model (like the one i had) was much better.

ironic though how much the back end looks like the 911

I guess I'm the only one who appreciates that the GT/S uses a transaxle and has an engine that's actually powerful <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> as well as carbon driveshaft and double a-arm front and rear suspension. If the 968 had those features it would be one of the best sports cars ever made and worth a hell of a lot more. Not sure that I'm crazy about GT/S being twin turbo or the 3675 curb weight but I think the styling is very, very nice. It's fun to see occasional SLS whose dimensions have serious presence but I like how much smaller the GT/S appears to be.

I like it a lot! It's something different. Not so sure about the front either, I would have to look at it in real life.

Btw Dan: did you just compare the rear of it with a Crossfire? My god man! You drank methanol or something? ;-)

back on the subject of the targa (hint hint)

it's interesting to think that a 400hp car is not super fast. sure, it's quick and all that, but frankly it's not much different than my 968. what i found to be the real winning point was how it hooked up that power. i felt like i could drive it full throttle all the time without much issue. the 968 on the other hand requires a lot more effort to keep it under control. that's what the new technology and 4WD does for you.

Dang, Bob. Looks like I will be living vicariously through you... The M4 and the Targa are both stunning and great cars, IMHO. You can't go wrong with either.

Admittedly, I am still smitten by the looks of my 996tt with the GT2 front end, but the new Targa is a real winner.

the 996turbo is the only other 911 i ever liked at all, but i did not fit in the car like i do the targa. they moved the dash, shortened the door height, and moved everything around so now i fit in the targa much like i do in the 968. the sport seats are almost identical to the seats i have in my 968 too. it really was very much a feeling of being at home.

Certainly as I get older getting in and out of cars seems to become more of an issue. Both 968's are slightly uncomfortable to get into although in fairness comparing the two is apples to oranges. Fitting into cars must present some design challenges in the development of cars.

this is something i noticed was pretty darned easy about the targa, in spite of the sport seats. i wasn't going to order those, due to exactly that issue, but after sitting in them, and getting in and out of the car a couple of times, i have decided i would go ahead with them

I'll try to go over to the local dealer tomorrow and take a look at it in person just to give flash the benefit of the doubt ( not that my opinion or anyone else's for that matter would factor in his decision, lol ) but maybe it's one of those cars which grow on you from up close . I understand they're fairly limited and the dealer might only have one in the showroom, so not sure if I can take it for a test drive but since I'm not interested in buying one there's no purposeful reason for ME to drive it, it would be purely for fun and to satisfy some curiosity. It was the same with the Maserati GT , and the Jaguar F ( R ) I drove - amazing technology, massive power, and and exhaust note that tickles your ears but..there was just something missing that the 968 has , and those cars didn't . And I suspect I'll feel the same about any new car I drive. I also can't imagine spending $ 150 K for a car, but I recognize that's just me ; as much as I enjoy cars I have a very difficult time justifying their value. A very odd thing for someone ( and those of you who know me realize I'm not exaggerating ) who spends upwards of $ 5 K + for a suit , or $ 10 K for a watch, or $ 1,500 for a pair of shoes..etc, and not just a handful of those things , but dozens upon dozens .. Somehow I see the value in a $ 500 k wardrobe , but when it comes to cars I simply can't see spending more than $ 50 K for one. Regardless of what it is.

I know, it's nuts when you compare one thing with another, but that's how I'm hard wired - can't change that.

good luck. they are like hen's teeth. pretty much all built to order and delivered hours after they come in. most showrooms do not have them. it was hard to find one down here, and i only had a 2 hour window to get up there, drive it, and then have them prep it for delivery that afternoon.

funny about the wardrobe comparison. i could care less what the clothes cost, or what maker, as long as they fit well and are comfortable. that stuff is just lost on me. i don't even notice that kind of thing. i ruin too many clothes to even think about spending a lot of money on them. i don't want to have to worry about that kind of thing. i'm just as happy in a pair of cherokee shorts as i am ralph lauren. i'm the same way with watches too. a $30k watch doesn't tell time any better than a $200 timex. i ruin the crystal on pretty much every watch i get, and i magnetize them all. i don't even wear one most of the time, since i already know what time it is naturally, and have clocks everywhere. no point in spending any money there. but, it is interesting to see where we all find it ok to spend and where not to.

i'm doing more homework on the car today. i need to start pouring over the options list, and spend some more time with the car. i need to take the big dog down to the dealership and see if she fits in the back.

Well, like I said different people - different perceptions as to what's important or where the value is . Highly subjective . Setting that aside and back to the Targa ; if anyone will have the biggest inventory of anything of the sort in the country ( even far more than SoCal..never thought I'd be able to say that..) it's the dealers close to Silicon Valley , so you can bet they'll get the largest allocation and possibly anywhere in the world, not just the US. But remains to be seen just how many we do get up here at any given dealer..

yeah - i've never been impressed by attire or accessories. maybe it's from the conservative upbringing. not sure. i just never found any value in that, and always thought of clothing and such as disposable items. to me, clothing and shoes are to be worn, cleaned, worn out, and then tossed. i pretty much cycle through my wardrobe every 5 years tops. i think i have maybe a half dozen things that are older than that, and it's only because i don't wear them. since i'm pretty much in shorts and tee shirts every day, i just buy the same stuff. heck, for the last 10 years or so, i have been working through a box of tee shirts from a client. i suppose if i had an office job, i might think differently, and when i was doing that, i had a lot more stuff, and was shopping a lot more regularly. still, i'm function over form, so there are limits to how far i would go. my wife on the other hand.......................

back to the car, from what i have been told so far, each dealership only gets about 5 per year, plus or minus. they just aren't making that many of them. that's kind of cool for me, as it will bring to the table some exclusivity that i enjoy about the 968.

It's a terrible thing to be a clothes horse. I got my addiction from my Dad. I'm not nearly as bad as I used to be but only because I don't for the most part need to wear a tie anymore. Sports jackets are another issue but I have most colors and combos so it's hard to find something that I say gotta have that. Half of my suits have been given away and still have more than I can wear. I stopped wearing jeans when I cut my hair and went to DC to college. It was too humid and hot to wear jeans. Never wore them again until I bought the first 968. Now they are a regular part of my non work wardrobe. I'm envious at others ability to consider purchasing the car we are speaking about because in my job that would be a bit of a no no. I'm in the process of having to get a new car if I can get up off my lazy duff and try some out. Flash I hope this meets your driving expectations, sounds like your having a lot of fun anyway!

it has been fun, though i have to say that it is harder than i thought. the options are just crazy. figuring out which ones i want, which ones i can live without, and what crosses over so i don't end up paying more than i need to is a lot more difficult than it should be. the information on the website is incomplete. i am going to have to go down and spend a couple of hours pouring over stuff with a salesman so i can figure out what it will be in the end.

i also need to spend a bit more time driving a $WD 911 so i can really see how it feels, and if i like it enough to part with the 968.

A strongpoint of any 911 since day 1, due to the engine's location. A very successful location, despite of what some people may say.

...but off course you already knew that :-)

not at all. in my view the 911 never has hooked up well. that's exactly why i have never like them. yes, they accelerate well in a straight line, due to the weight being in the rear. but the 2WD versions have always handled like crap (handling being very different than cornering). even the cornering has been dicey. you really had to drive the car very differently than anything else, and i did not like that. what i like about this one is that the car pulls through corners, rather than being pushed through them. you really don't notice that the engine is in the rear. a lot of this is due to the change in wheel placement, moving the center forward, but most of it is the 4WD. the 4WD is 60/40, but the front wheels pulling as hard as they do makes it seem like they drag the motor even farther forward.
