[968CPT]

Has anyone had good/bad experiences with a VW GTI or Golf R? The Golf R will be released in limited quantities in the US sometime at the end of this year and everything I read about it is positive. Would love to hear from someone who has driven one or has experience with the lesser powered GTI.

I have also read and heard from GTI owners that its a great car. I believe FOX944 now has 2.



my only complaint, and this is from a non-owner so grain of salt this one. The intr is too bland. I was peeking and poking around in the VWs at the auto show and was a bit disappointed at how bare the intr felt. If i was buying an old car this would be fine. But If I'm getting a 2005+ I want the goodies.



i understand that for some, the minimalist approach is what they appreciate about the VWs.

I've never driven one, but from a distance, the GTI is one of my favorite cars. Another one is the E36 M3. I have a neighbor (my former staff manager) who has one of each! He sold his 997 for the GTI, and loves it.

The GTI is a great driving car. I've done a little bit of canyon driving in one and it feels stable, good handling, let's you know with a little understeer when it wants to break loose. Very nice smooth ride. I've driven both the 6-speed and DSG, both are great. If I had any traffic commute, I'd go DSG in an instant.

Test drove a 2004 r32 once with the 6 speed. Nice ride, but I couldnt justify the price tag, and built a 3.0 turbo 951.

I have a 2007 model 2.0T Passat (built in Germany). I would never buy another VW again.



There have been significant problems with my car including:



coil pack failures

air conditioning compressor replaced

power window multiple failures

immobiliser failure

turbo pcv failure

shock failure

various electrical gremlins

paint peeling off trim



Look at Edmunds car reviews and see what you think.



Having said that, I have friends that have GTI's and haven't had many problems, and others that have had to replace the DSG box in the first year.



Next family car will be BMW or Porsche.



If you want an R for the power, just get a GTI and reprogram the ECU to boost power to 184kw/247hp.

In general, German cars seem to be very hit-or-miss in terms of reliability. Even within a brand, say BMW, there are models that do fairly well in Consumer Reports' ratings, and others that are abysmal.

We've owned four BMW's over the years, and the 968 is my second Porsche. Of the BMW's, three have been pretty reliable, but the fourth was a nightmare (still a great car, though) - thank goodness my wife bought the extended warrantee behind my back - I was mad at her for doing it, but was I ever thrilled in the long run! Both Porsches, including the 968, were quite reliable overall.
