Glovebox removal (?)
#1

I started disassembling glovebox, to get better access to the battery - Needed power for new sound amplifier.

I almost managed to remove the glovebox, but it seems that there's weird plug or such on the right side of glovebox. there's some wire's going in the plug.. it seems that it would be something where you can plug something in, but the problem is that I don't know what?

The point is that the glovebox won't come out if I don't remove the plug + wires... and would like to know for what they are there, before cutting anything off.

- Any ideas what kind of weird plug + wiring system there is assembled, on the right hand wall of the glovebox?

- best way to remove it (if possible, not damaging the car)?`

Thanks!

Br.,

Matti-

It has been quite some time since I removed the glovebox when I did the glovebox cover repair, but I don't recall anything being on the right side. I thought there was a light on top only.

Perhaps there is something on the outside side.... dunno. If you have the electronic copy of the PET and manuals, look in the there. I believe most, if not all, of these docs are archived here.

Is your car a left hooker? (left hand drive?)

I had my glovebox out about two weeks ago. The only stock electrical involved was the light. (The reason I say "stock" is that I've run some additional wiring for a Bluetooth system I've installed.) There was nothing on the right side of the box, so it seems like you're dealing with something installed by some previous owner.

I went back to reread your post, and it got me wondering - is the wiring you're talking about actually connected to the glovebox, or is it plugged into the round diagnostic connector that's by the front right corner of the box, blocking your ability to remove the box?

Glove box is very simple to remove.

There should be 4 screws just inside the box

and 3 screws along the underside for the glove box door.

IIRC, There is nothing on the right side.

There is a diagnostic port under and to right of the glove box.

On the left side is a tube for the cabin temp sensor.

Parallel posts, Smokie...

I found - to my pleasant surprise - that you don't have to remove the glove box door to remove the glove box. They are mounted separately.

Hi Anchorman,

yeah, it's a round connector on the right hand side. It's there for a diagnostics? So maybe not better to cut the wires...

Any thoughts how to remove and assemble it safely again? I couldn't get the glovebox off, when that connector is there.

... and my car drives from left hand side. as we do in Finland.

Look at the first picture.

Are you saying that big black connector is in the way?

It might be the same connector - although in mine the wires are wrapped in black "cloth". My connector had a metallic middlepart, looked like you could put in it a key or similar - but a bit smaller.

how did you manage to get it off - just simply pulling it off...?

I did not touch it. I just pulled the glove box out.

That connector should not be a problem.

Are you sure that it is not the glove box light that hanging up?

Can you post a pic?

I'm sure it's not the light, because the glovebox is loose from the top, and the only part it fights against disassembling is the right side.

I'll take a pic, so you'll see better what kind of connector there is!

Nope guys, its not a rca plug. the pic is not very good.. The hole in that connector is square-shaped, and not symmetrically in the middle. Size is close to rca, but slightly bigger. I tried to check pet for that part, but couldnt find anything...

i am all but certain that it's not a factory thing - i can't imagine what they would put in the glove box - i don't think even the telephone had anything in there

if i could see the pin configuation, i could probably tell you what it was for

see if you can get a shot without a flash - use regular incandescent lighting

If you can see were the wire coming from the connector goes it would help. It should be fairly easy to see from underneath, on that side of the glovebox.

Since the plug has nothing plugged into it, I'd judge that where it goes doesn't matter - it's not doing anything. I'd cut the wire, and then continue with whatever you wanted to do. You'll spend much more time trying to figure out what this used to do than it could possibly be worth - especially since the answer is worth nothing.

might be an old power supply for a cell phone or radar. check for power before cutting....wouldn't want to short something out...

Altohough it is not a facotry connector, NEVER cut a wire unless you know what it connected to.
