Gas Prices

If we want to stop global destruction, we should start with the fashion industry. That industry alone causes the planting / growth / harvesting / processing of literal mountains of clothing and goods, cosmetics and fragrances... and it repeats itself every year just because some different color is chosen to be "in".

To one degree or another, I think we all know that driving our combustion engined vehicles is not good for the environment - on many levels. That small but growing spark of guilt might get us to buy a more fuel efficient vehicle next time or car pool to work a couple times a week, but let's face it, we - us, the consumer generation, haven't shown much interest in, or taken much action to prevent the onset of devastating effects of climate change caused by CO2 emissions.

Depending on where you get your (dis)information, man-made climate change is either impossible, a liberal media conspiracy, merely a political football or an inescapable doomsday scenario already underway. I think it's somewhere in the middle of all of the above. Greenland is melting. We've already seen chunks of ice the size of Rhode Island break off of Antarctica and begin floating north. Is this all part of a natural process that humans play no part in? No way. Not when it's happening this fast.

So will we all be driving electric cars in 20 years? Maybe. But if we're still burning coal to generate the electricity for all those billions of future electric vehicles, then we really won't be any better off, environmentally, than we are today.

That Tesla Model S is one cool looking car though.

Bite your tongue ! That's only plausible to the U.S., which has become a nation of ( largely ) slobs. Or large slobs. Actually, both !

yes, indeed - and incredibly successful as well - tesla just announced they're now able to pay the entire gov't subsidy back 9 years ahead of time ! on the flip side, I see so many of them around these parts, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting one. they're the new Boxsters which is surprising, bacuse they sure as hell are not inexpensive !

Seriously? I've only seen one. I did visit their showroom, though, and I agree that it's a very nice looking, innovative car. But I scratch my head at the demographics of who's purchasing them. Anybody who can afford a $70-95K car can't be too concerned with the price of gas, and as nice as it is, it's still strictly an in-town vehicle. It is gratifying to know that we don't have to refer to electric cars as "coal-burners" any more - they're now more accurately "natural gas-burners", which is a step in the right direction.

Wait until you drive one. I drove a students (a/x school) last week-end. For a 4650 lb. car it is mighty impressive. Fit and finish will match anything in it's price range. Throttle response is immediate. Steering response is very good and overall handling compares favorably with any large sport sedan. Full throttle accelleration reminded me of a jet taking off, the power just kept coming. Yeah I'd buy a mid size version. The company supposedly is building recharging stations along major freeways that will allow a 80% recharge in less than 30 minutes at NO COST. As it is the owner said he can get around 300 miles before a recharge is needed.

seriously ? that's how much it weighs ? wow ! that's gotta be in the Escalade or Denali territory . Woof. but I guess that just goes to show you just how much torque those electric engines generate for this car to catapult and keep pulling like crazy the moment you step on the gas

As for how may of them are in this area, it may have a liitle to do with the HQs being here, or the Silicon Valley being full of many, many, many very wealthy tech cos employees who tpically are environmentally-inclined , a combination of those two, and/or who knows what other reasons ..

Yeah, the Model S achieves its impressive range the old fashioned way - through the use of massively large batteries. But they're situated very low on the car, giving it a low center of gravity, and, from what I've read, respectable handling, despite its heft.

DS - Yes I see quite a lot of them these days down here in OC - maybe it's a California thing. It seems to be the fashion accessory car of the moment. And it sure is a hell of a lot better looking than a Panamera!

I think I saw one at a resort on Sunday where I was attending a Formula 1 watch party. That would make the second one I've seen in the six months or so they've been out. Although, maybe it was the same one I saw several months ago - they were both red.

I suppose, given their range, it's going to take a *long* time for them to get here to the East coast. Or the mother of all extension cords.

Gas is cheap here. I'm from Maui, we've been paying over $4.50/gal for at least the last 5-7 years so so. Milk is also expensive there, about $8-9/gal now. Good thing I'm lactose intolerant.

Re Teslas - I should clarify that I was talking about an abundance of the sedan ( model S ) , not the tiny roadster ..I may have seen a handful of roadsters , but the number of sedans are starting to get on my nerves : seven spotted just today - 4 while driving and 3 others parked in the same damn grocery store lot in just tne 15 minute timeline that was there. How many of these cars did they sell ??!!

That is so weird. From the sound of the responses, it sounds like they're all in the Bay Area, and SoCal. Austin is a relatively affluent city, and VERY environmentally oriented (the city banned the use of single-use plastic grocery bags back in March, for example), and Tesla's basically nonexistent out here. How many people can there be who can afford a $90,000 car that can only go a little over 100 miles in any direction?

the tesla 4 door base model is only about $60k and can go nearly 300 miles. a loaded one will run you $79k though
