I am curious about the range of gas mileage experienced by the members of this forum. My most recent unscientific estimate was 18mpg, but I have heard some other owners claim to have reached close to 30.
So, if you keep track of such things, please post and let us know what you get and what alterations you have done to your 968. Like I said, I get around 18 overall, and I have the airbox mod, an RS Barn exhaust, and an RS Barn chip, along with chassis/strut tower braces. I am also running 17's rather than the stock 16's on my 92 cab.
Thanks,
Matt

I don't keep strict records, but 18 sounds about right. On a good tank I can do as much as 22 MPG...on an all highway trip I can come close to 28-30 (if I stay off the pedal).
On a "Fun Run" my mileage has been as low as 14-15 MPG.

The first column is the year. The third column is the odometer. The 4th column is the number of km/year. The last column is mpg in imperial units. You need divide these last numbers by 1.2 to get US equivalent.
The are annual totals, all kinds of driving. The car was a 6 speed. My cab got about 20% less.

Waylander, your highway cruise numbers are similar to mine. My data is for an entire year with all sorts of driving. In Canada we also use the larger gallon, so the data are equivalent.

that's good to know Kim, i do know it improved quite a bit with a new Lambda sensor, and a clean MAF

This is good information! It seems that my numbers are a bit on the low side. I rarely go above 4k, and even my spirited driving is tame compared to others I have driven with.
My O2 sensor is pretty new, so maybe I should look into cleaning the MAF (any advice?). Also, I live at 4500' altitude, which may account for some of the lower MPG.

So, I think I will start with cleaning the MAF. Anyone out there have any suggestions? Is it like my old Subaru, just take it off and spray the heck out of it?

I generally get about 18 mpg around town. On the freeway cruising in 6th gear at 75mph I can easily get 28 mph or better. Amother measure, I can drive from Alameda (SF Bay Area) to LA on a single tank of fuel, again cruising in 6th at about 75mph.

Dan,
You are correct about the local Bay Area freeways, although I was able to get A5 up to something approaching warp speed on I-280 the other day. The best mileage I've gotten with the 968 has been on I-5 headed to LA and as I noted, starting with a full tank I can make LA without refueling. If I recall correctly that calculates out to about 28 miles to the gallon.

Follow-up to the discussion. This past weekend I had the opportunity to take a long drive through rural Nevada to do a more controlled mileage assessment.
Combined 80% freeway and 20% city driving yielded overall 25 mpg, and that was a lot of cruising at 70-80+ in 6th. Rural Interstate 80 is mixed 70 and 80 MPH limits. It was nice getting the car up to a good cruising speed for an extended period of time.
I forget how much fun this car is on long, fast cruises, in-town driving is just not nearly as satisfying.
