Gas Mileage Experiences
#1

I am curious about the range of gas mileage experienced by the members of this forum. My most recent unscientific estimate was 18mpg, but I have heard some other owners claim to have reached close to 30.

So, if you keep track of such things, please post and let us know what you get and what alterations you have done to your 968. Like I said, I get around 18 overall, and I have the airbox mod, an RS Barn exhaust, and an RS Barn chip, along with chassis/strut tower braces. I am also running 17's rather than the stock 16's on my 92 cab.

Thanks,

Matt

I don't keep strict records, but 18 sounds about right. On a good tank I can do as much as 22 MPG...on an all highway trip I can come close to 28-30 (if I stay off the pedal).

On a "Fun Run" my mileage has been as low as 14-15 MPG.

Jay

The first column is the year.  The third column is the odometer. The 4th column is the number of km/year. The last column is mpg in imperial units. You need divide these last numbers by 1.2 to get US equivalent.

The are annual totals, all kinds of driving.  The car was a 6 speed.  My cab got about 20% less.

I checked my mileage after I did an airbox upgrade. Engine is otherwise stock. I drive a 6-speed manual. 25 hwy/21 city. My measurement is not 100% scientific as it was calculated with miles driven/fuel loaded.....but it is close enough.

Keep in mind the way you drive is a big factor. My driving is usually soft.

Waylander, your highway cruise numbers are similar to mine.  My data is for an entire year with all sorts of driving. In Canada we also use the larger gallon, so the data are equivalent.

that's good to know Kim, i do know it improved quite a bit with a new Lambda sensor, and a clean MAF

This is good information! It seems that my numbers are a bit on the low side. I rarely go above 4k, and even my spirited driving is tame compared to others I have driven with.

My O2 sensor is pretty new, so maybe I should look into cleaning the MAF (any advice?). Also, I live at 4500' altitude, which may account for some of the lower MPG.

I live at 5,500 ft and, last time I checked, my mileage was high 20's at highway speeds and low 20's for just running around. I have a six-speed, the air box mod, RS Barn Stage 1 chip, RS Barn cat back exhaust and suspension updates.  I tend to drive a little more on the spirited side (or maybe a lot more B) ).  I haven't kept the anal records Kim did so I'll start recording mileage figures.  Should have some really good data by the time I arrive in Sonora CA end of June.

So you averaged generally between 23 - 28 US mpg.  I would say i'm seeing similar.

So, I think I will start with cleaning the MAF. Anyone out there have any suggestions? Is it like my old Subaru, just take it off and spray the heck out of it?

I generally get about 18 mpg around town. On the freeway cruising in 6th gear at 75mph I can easily get 28 mph or better. Amother measure, I can drive from Alameda (SF Bay Area) to LA on a single tank of fuel, again cruising in 6th at about 75mph.

Chris, you can't fool any of us locals ..the average "cruising" speed on any Bay Area freeways is about 12 mph. , on a good day :-( ;-) . Except maybe between 10 pm and 5 am , when you might, just might find a road where you can go 75...

I've never calculated, or even paid attention in any way the the mileage I get with any car , 968s included , so unfortunately I can't provide any data, not even a wild guess . I've always driven the 968 six speed in a very spirited manner ( and that's an understatement ) so not sure the MPG I get on it would be of any benchmarking value .

Dan,

You are correct about the local Bay Area freeways, although I was able to get A5 up to something approaching warp speed on I-280 the other day. The best mileage I've gotten with the 968 has been on I-5 headed to LA and as I noted, starting with a full tank I can make LA without refueling. If I recall correctly that calculates out to about 28 miles to the gallon.

Follow-up to the discussion. This past weekend I had the opportunity to take a long drive through rural Nevada to do a more controlled mileage assessment.

Combined 80% freeway and 20% city driving yielded overall 25 mpg, and that was a lot of cruising at 70-80+ in 6th. Rural Interstate 80 is mixed 70 and 80 MPH limits. It was nice getting the car up to a good cruising speed for an extended period of time.

I forget how much fun this car is on long, fast cruises, in-town driving is just not nearly as satisfying.

I drove 2,420 miles going to/from the West Coast Gathering and then up to N CA to visit our daughter. Two passes over the Sierra Nevadas and one trip to Mendocino. Some high speed highway runs and some twisties. Overall a lot of fun driving. Averaged 24 mpg, Air box mod, RS Barn Stage 1 chip and RS Barn "cat backz" exhaust and suspension mods.

My figures are in liters per kilometer.

Through town 1 liter every 8 kilometer (12.5ltr / 100KM).

Same in heavy traffic.

Free running on the highway it's consuming 1 liter every 11.8 kilometer (8.5ltr / 100KM).

My car stays consuming this while maintaining speeds up to 160 KM/hr, that's were the variocam starts working around 4500 rpm.

But this is only possible on the German highways when it's not to crowded.

Sorry forgot:

17 inch rims fitted, for the rest the car is still standard as it is.
