the tip gets less fuel economy on a normally aspirated car than a 6 speed (somewhere around 20% less).  that would follow with an SC

an SC CAN get better fuel economy, under certain driving conditions, but you would really have to watch it.  the reason is that more power is generated earlier, and so you can get off the throttle earlier.  it is incredibly difficult to monitor this, and get it, but it can be done.  the line between "frugal acceleration" and "gross consumption" is a fine one.  basically you have to stay in the part throttle maps, never getting to the WOT maps, and get off the throttle the instant you get up to speed, and that the speed is "normal" (no speeding).

dan's chip is a custom one.  i set his up, knowing how he drives.  it is richer than the others, and has the timing backed off a bit in certain areas.  this is to protect that brand new engine.  dan is well known for demanding everything the engine has to offer, and i felt it prudent to build in certain safeguards.  the downside is a cost in fuel economy.  12mpg is low, but not unexpected, due to the combination of the fact that it is a tip (that will cost you 4mpg), supercharged (most drivers lose about 3-6mpg), driven mostly in traffic (never good on gas), with the air conditioning on all the time (good for another 3mpg loss), and mapped a bit richer.

Yes, I plead guilty as charged..   I think I get significantly better mileage with the six speed ( though I never really counted to see what exactly that average MPG may be, just by how often I need to fill it up, which is less frequently than the tip )  in spite of the fact that I drive the six speed a lot more  "aggressively" than I do the tiptronic.   However, the mitigating factor is also that the six speed is driven 80% highway , 20% roads - so essentially the opposite of the tip - and rarely in stop and go traffic.  Plus it's probably close to 150 lbs or so lighter, ( entire OE catback removed , spare tire removed, )  yada , yada , yada.   The tip still has all that in there, plus the regular extra weight over the manual .

I'm sure with the six speed i must get at least 13 mpg !!      Tongue
