Fuel pump not running??
#21

my guess is that there is a misnomer going on, and that the CPU is really the DME, and that the reference to DME is really the DME relay

I have a list of general things to check on a 968 I found on the net when I have problems. Here is a snippet...

Porsche specifically tells you:

Never “jump” this car from a “battery booster” = DME damage

Never cross the battery wires = DME damage.

Do not attach anything to the ignition coil or cross its wires = DME damage.

Do not disconnect the battery’s wires while the car is running will result in Alternator Death and DME damage.

Does anyone see a common thread here The DME is like an aneurysm waiting to go POP!

I can see how reverse polarity or shorting the coil would be a problem, [that's the same with any modern electronic car]. However not being able to jump the car is a little concerning. The battery, if in place, should act as a buffer, but I'm not in any hurry to test this theory. I'm fairly sure they had filter caps back then - why they didn't protect the electronics better is beyond me...

i use my battery charger to "jump" the battery all the time - no issues yet - of course now that i have said that the next time will fry it for sure

I think the deal here is if you have a weak battery that won't start a car don't hook up a battery charger and try to start the car. The filtering capacity of the battery is now nill and you are hitting the DME with whatever awful wave the charger is putting out cuz it certainly isn't beatifully rectified and filtered DC at 200 amps. It's some choppy square wave riddled with harmonics.... oh oh, I feel a Fourier transform coming on
