front bumper screen
#1

The plastic screen in the 2 horizontal slit openings below the foglights is broken. This seems to provide some support for the openings, although my plastic under engine cover is also hanging some. I can repair the under engine cover. Can I replace the plastic screens in the horizontal openings. This is a track only car.

This screen CAN be replaced (several here have done it) you need to pull the under engine shield to get at it IIRC, Do a search in the forum and you should find info on this

You will not be able to replace the mesh screen without pulling off the front bumper cover. Fortunately, it is not too difficult to do. I just pulled mine off yesterday to repair the mesh screen and get bumper repainted. The mesh costs ~ $89 (plus shipping) from Sunset Porsche. You can read more here.

I was about to recommend Dave Greimann's aftermarket metal mesh screen - only to check and find that Dave has closed up shop for a while. I installed his metal screen and have found that it both looks good and when you scrape the front end badly it just bends, rather than breaking. You just bend it back.

The front clip is fairly easy to remove and re-install. Just be careful with the clips and screws. The screws on the ends on some cars are actually rivets and once you get them off you have to replace the hardware.

In fact, the plastic mesh screen CAN be replaced without removing the front bumper, BUT, I'm not sure it is worth the effort to do it that way!

The two major obstacles, when replacing the grill with bumper in place, are the oil cooler and the (for want of the correct term) air guide to the radiator. If you chose to try it and not remove the bumper, you will need a long, thin box end wrench (13mm?) to remove the oil cooler mounting bracket. Leave the oil lines intact. The Air Guide will take some masterfull "wiggling" to get out and back in, but can be done with patience.

Of course, the under body tray(s) have to be removed first for access.

You will then need a long but very small, sharply pointed Phillips Head Screw Driver to remove the 18 (yes, count them!) screws that hold in the Grill. Again, patience, patience! And do buy some liniment to apply to your lower back after lying in a very contorted position for a very long time. Or perhaps you have the luxury of a lift! How lucky!

Yes, the price is in the < $100.00 range for the part.
