Foul weather notes
#1

Well ... in the normally dry area known as SoCal we have been getting a lot of rain the past few days. Probably over 5-6 inches, which is somewhere near 1/2 of the normally annual rain fall. I've been driving the 968 in the rain ... I know... wish I didn't have to, wouldn't have except my other car is down. Found:

1. the rear hatch wiper actually came in handy a few times, was useful so I could see better especially reversing.

2. the rear hatch defogger draws quite a bit of power. I can hear the fuel pump noise significantly drop in tone when I turn on the defogger. And the volt meter drops also, looks like about .5 or .7 volts.

3. a few drips from the sunroof, nothing bad, I don't think the drains are plugged, just a bypass leakage during heavy rain while stopped in traffic, I think the channel got full.

4. Many SoCalers apparently don't know what rain is, since their driving behavior continues as if it is dry with full sunshine. Most likely years of Coppertone has seeped into the brain. During one 15 mile stretch of freeway yesterday, it took about 50 minutes and passed 3 separate accidents, spinout with 3 car crash, jack-knifed 18 wheeler, stalled car.

5. I had to open a window just a crack sometimes, to get more airflow for defogging purposes. Opening the passenger side is safer since the windshield wipers drag water to the driver's side door / window. Remember to quickly close window when the jacked up pickup truck with a 2 foot lift and monster tires passes you on the right at 90 mph.

6. The "instant defogger" button is great, defogs the windshield real quickly, it seems to have some kind of instant-heat mode.

7. I kept the driving lights on all the time, but had to add the headlights after a couple of people almost customized the side of my car while they were trying to pull into my lane without thoroughly checking if the lane was clear.

Flash's area may have gotten 7-10 inches of rain, I've been checking the regional doppler radar. I hope he put the top up.

it't crazy here for sure - i've never seen this much rain here - thankfully i was prepared for it - i haven't been out to assess the damage yet, but i think i will escape most of it - not like the last storm where i was completely under water in the back yard, and had trees snapping in the wind

Watched the local news report on TV yesterday evening to get a view on what is happening with the storms. They reported 7.66 inches since Friday for our town. In a dry year, that is the total rain for the whole year. Although it was quite different, the overall experience was no worse than the typical storms that happen in the east about once a month during the summer.

Tomorrow it is supposed to be sunny with no clouds, I'm planning to put the 968 out in the sun, open all doors, let it bake the lingering humidity / water out.

Same story here in NorCal, raining almost every day for a couple of weeks although the amount of rainfall has been far less than SoCal's share where people were actually spotted building Arcs I hear.. So the 968 sat in the garage all this time, but today's clear skies and dried roads called out for a spirited drive Just got back from a one hour fun run on roads and highways with hardly any traffic. Radar detector on, and the lack of any chirping was encouragment enough to go a little crazy.. Gotta love the Holiday season ( at least in the morning, later on the day all the cars jam up the roads once again on their way to shopping malls and what-not )

Incidental to this drive, I will state this here and now, although it may be a good topic for another thread : the performance stats you see for the new Cadillac CTSV are either pure b.s., or what they tested was a completely stripped model, with only one seat, driven by an 80lbs jockey, downhill, on a really cold morning. It's fast, but not anyway near in the league of the F 430, as they claim.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. Blizzard here in Central Jersey - getting ready to use the chains. My 968, with snow tires handles better than the front wheel drive mini-van with traction control. Having a 50lb of sand in each of the rear wheel wells helps a bit....

Peace.

Hi Scott,

Yeah, I saw the news about the blizzard, something like 1-2 feet of snow in NY and Boston, and also the whole eastern seaboard. I wish you well, and all our 968 brethren in and around New Jersey. Is it too late to get a 6" lift for the 968?

Scott, do you have tires all around? I am in the poconos and didn't think it was safe to drive. I used to date a mortician who put grave markers in the back of her rx7.worked like a charm!

A foot of snow here just North of Philadelphia. The 968 is nestled in the garage and the cars in the driveway have been covered since Saturday night. A very relaxing weekend for us.

the NorthEast is getting pounded with storms, temps here in ( not-so-sunny-anymore ) California have been about 15 to 20 degrees below normal, I went outside this morning and the fog was so thick you could not see a car length ahead of you...that's just nasty ! Oh, did I say fog ? Surely I am mistaking it for steam caused by the excessive heat of the global warming we have been warned about for a number of years now. Any of you guys back east feel that global warming hit you yet ? It's ok though, just as long as you bought the custom-made 968 fleece " snuggie " and you're keeping it tucked away in the garage al warm and cozy

Hey Guys,

All is well - I finished digging out - measured 16" in my front yard - the drifts in the back, where the wind tends to swirl, are about 34". I'll attach some pics as soon as I get a chance.

I got the 968 out of the driveway and really couldn't move and almost got stuck in the street in front of my house. Even with snow tires and extra weight in the back, I almost had to mount the chains to get back up and in the driveway. But I took some time and with the snowblower, moved every inch of show along the path I would need to take from the street to the driveway and made it work.

Rap: The snow tires I have, Conti Winter Contact are excellent for a small amount of snow or slush, and really great on dry pavement in cold weather, but for this, I think I need the Blizzak or something similar with a more aggressive tread with more bite.

I hope that everyone else is alright as well as we continue to dig out. Now I am going to take out my girls (Elli, 5, and Maggie, 3) out to make snow angels, I just hope that I don't lose them!

With those snow amounts I thought it might be somewhat difficult to drive. I have used Blizzak on my Volvo S80, S60r and now an Infiniti G37SX. We get decent amounts of snow here and they work quite well. They don't feel great on dry pavement but that is a consequence of where we live. When the snow amounts get too deep nothing works well and it is just time to hunker down and lite a fire! The 968 sits pretty low so I expect one does not need much snow for that to happen.

In light of all the non-stop rain storms and flooding and mudslides and the dozens of downed giant trees some of which have unfortunately killed people, while others destroyed cars and homes, given the mechanical curse my tiptronic has been from day 1 , and eveidently continuing on that path , I'm looking around for every old, huge oak tree I can find to park the car under it and then just wait and hope ...

( no, I'm not waiting inside the car . just wanted to mention that before one of you wise-asses will undoubtedly make that remark .. ;-) ;-) )

make sure your insurance premiums are paid up and the car is fully covered, that would be somewhat appropriate, in a warped way, to not have current coverage on it. Tongue
