Format changed?

Well, if current market share is as small as you guys say it is, it looks like my apple stock has plenty of room to grow.

there is no denying that macs are the small portion of the market (currently a little more than 10% of sales) - all that means is that nearly 90% of the public is either too broke, or uninformed, or wants something else out of a computer than those of use who want out of the box no hassle performance

there is no denying that there is a lot more out there for the pc user than for the mac user

there is no denying that even i continually run into compatibility issues with pc users and pc formats

i choose to live with those "issues", rather than have to worry about constantly fixing my system - i have to fix enough things - computers won't be one of them

by the way, the dual 1gig G4 i have in the garage is now over 10 years old and STILL has not crashed - it also keeps up with the new vaio we just got - the only reason i got the new mac was that some of the software i wanted to run would not run on that OS, and i could not upgrade due to the processors in it

side note: the last time i checked, about 30% of our users of this website are mac users

maybe that's why the market share is what it is - people keep having to buy new pcs, but mac users continue to use the same machine for a lot longer

maybe if apple made a computer that broke down or obsoleted itself more quickly, they would sell more machines

but we already have windows, so why reinvent the wheel there?

I started with Motorola's semiconductor division (since spun off as Freescale Semiconductor, who I still work for), whose processors went in the original Macs, in 1981. We had them on our desktops for years, but about 10 years ago, we exchanged them for PCs, primarily for speed and compatibility reasons. Since then, a few Macs have crept back into the company, and my factory's network runs on them. Personally, I can't say I notice a huge difference between them in terms of ease of use or speed. They're different enough that even though I grew up on a Mac, I'm utterly lost when I have to use one now. You just get used to either one. My whole family has Macs, but I still have my trusty 10-year-old PC, which, although I do need to keep up with the malware, bot, and virus protection, continues to run like a top, so I have no desire to change. Losing my right click-ability would drive this non-drug user scrambling for a doobie, I must say [Image: tongue.gif].

After spending 6 hours on the phone with multiple tech support people located in India the last time I tried a Windows upgrade, I dumped the whole PC thing in favor of Apple. The wireless system in our house operates flawlessly. My Iphone to computer syncs are equally flawless. Operating system updates work right the first, every time. We set up one of the computers with Office on the outside chance that I need to produce something for work from home. It is effortless.

Coolest thing of all is that I just got an App for my Iphone that allows the phone to function as a wireless control unit for the digital control system that my Marklin HO trains run on.

" side note: the last time i checked, about 30% of our users of this website are mac users "

Somewhat O.T., but every time I see a percentage-driven statistic I ALWAYS look at the opposite side ; the one that comes to mind the most was a MADD ( mothers against drunk drivers ) TV ad campaign which

pointed out that nearly 30% of all automobile related fatalities are caused by drunk drivers! Ok,but..uhh..that means roughly 70% of the other fatalities are caused by sober drivers. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> So that means the roads are a hell of a lot safer if everyone was drunk ? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Yes, yes, I recognize the idea was to send out a plea suggesting that elimination of drunk driving would reduce fatalities by 30%, but the way statistics are used to deliver some messages need to be qualified a bit more.

Oh, this post was sent from my PC where I can use the Forum's Emoticons, as opposed to my IPad where I can't find the damn things <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Flash with this new change when someone sends me a message it doesn't show up anywhere. Nor is there a settings function in the right corner as Tama suggested. Suggestions?

I think that was Blau's suggestion.

when someone sends you a message how? where?

side note: we still get an awful lot of people responding to emails they get which are actually notifications of a PM - this will NOT go to the sender - instead it goes to the ADMIN - you can turn those notifications off in your settings panel, but you must log on and actually respond to the PM, not the notification email

sorrry tama, it showed up on my email and yes I know you can't respond to it. Everything is the same on my office pc not mac! So I am able to respond. But I spend a lot of time on my ipad at home and the top part of the page is not there. No access to a setting control. Can't see the number of times I have been on the site, not important, but that left side is gone as well. Just happened I believe last week.

the mobile version is a stripped down model - it is not intended to be the primary form - i used to be able to get the full version on the iphone, but not anymore - the mobile version is easier to use on the phone, but i'm not sure i like it better

I've been trying to get my folks off PCs for years, but they seem to enjoy fighting the malware/virus tide, replacing their dead computer every two or three years and canceling credit cards when they get compromised after buying online (this just happened to my mom again yesterday). Sorry to add to the eternal Mac vs. PC flame war, but you couldn't pay me to touch a PC!

If you want to see the full version on your mobile device, change the User Agent string, if your platform supports it.

Boy above my pay grade. What is a user agent string?

Your browser is your "User Agent". Certain websites "sniff" your browser for an identifying "User Agent String" and they will serve a different website depending on the browser (User Agent) you have. By giving the website a User Agent String for a desktop-class browser, you can make it give you the desktop version of the website.

This, from Wikipedia:

User agent sniffing

The term user agent sniffing refers to the practice of Web sites showing different content when viewed with a certain user agent. On the Internet, this will result in a different site being shown when browsing the page with a specific browser. A useful example of this is Microsoft Exchange Server 2003's Outlook Web Access feature. When viewed with Internet Explorer 6 (or newer), more functionality is displayed compared to the same page in any older browsers, because older browsers could not render the same content.[sup][citation needed][/sup] User agent sniffing is mostly considered poor practice, since it encourages browser-specific design and penalizes new browsers with unrecognized user agent identifications. Instead, the W3C recommends creating HTML markup that is standard,[sup][citation needed][/sup] allowing correct rendering in as many browsers as possible, and to test for specific browser features rather than particular browser versions or brands.[sup][5][/sup]

Web sites specifically targeted towards mobile phones, like NTT DoCoMo's I-Mode or Vodafone's Vodafone Live! portals, often rely heavily on user agent sniffing, since mobile browsers often differ greatly from each other. Many developments in mobile browsing have been made in the last few years,[sup][when?][/sup] while many older phones that do not possess these new technologies are still heavily used. Therefore, mobile Web portals will often generate completely different markup code depending on the mobile phone used to browse them. These differences can be small, e.g., resizing of certain images to fit smaller screens, or quite extensive, e.g., rendering of the page in WML instead of XHTML.

Yet this worked up until last week. So if I understand, I need a new browser? Any suggestions Tama?

You may not need a new browser, if the one that's built in allows you to change that User Agent String. Or, you can use a browser or app designed to let you change that setting. Atomic?

I'm just a PC guy, so I know what might help you, but I don't know how to do it on an Apple product.

I thought the software got updated last week - is that about the time it started working differently for you?

we have not updated the software yet - we only changed a setting on the mobile app
