Fog Lamp assembly confusion
#1

Folks:

As I have written previously in the this forum, I am searching for a fog lamp assembly passenger side for my 968. They are very hard to find. The Porsche PET says the correct part is 944 631 046 00 but that is discontinued and none are available in Germany (although a new one is available on Ebay for an absurd price). In speaking with a US Porsche dealer, Germany has over 400 units  944 631 034 00 which is for the German market. They cannot confirm that it is a direct replacement for the 944 631 046 00. I believe it is physically the same, possibly different internals.

Does anyone have any idea what the difference between the two is.

BTW, so far I have uncovered 6 different part numbers for the fog lamp assembly.

Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Bob

Indeed  they are.    I learned that the hard way, and that's way back in the day when the fog lamps were still expensive but not as outrageous as they are now.      Having said that , your insurance will cover the damage and replacement ( assuming you can find the part ) of your lamp, under the "comprehensive " part of your policy, where most people carry small deductibles ( $ 50 to $ 100 s the norm ), just as windshield damage is covered under the same criteria, but better to add the protection to the lamp than deal with claims..  I wish windshields would have some completely transparent rock-proof shield you can buy, I've gone through 6 different ones in the last ten years, on three different cars.  Fortunately only one fog lamp, and no headlights but I have the lens protections on those as well.

Is there a huge diference with the 993 units?

993 631 082 00 is the right foglamp.

They seem to have the same shape/form, but not sure if they fit nicely (the transparant blinkers don't fit perfectly but they fit).

If these units will do the job there are plenty around for a better price, still expensive though.

Just FYI, the salvage yards are pretty savvy about NLA parts so if you think you can get a cheap part there you might have a rude awakening .. sometimes they ask more $$ for used parts than the cost of new parts from Porsche when they were available. But some places may be reasonable, you have to do a lot of searching and calls

Thanks all. I will contact Sunset on Monday. i don't believe the 993 units fit. While they look similar, the lens thickness is very different. When I got this car, there was a 911 fog lamp from the mid 90s in the bumper. It doesn't look right and it doesn't fit properly.

Pay attention to the lenses markings when you install them, because they look almost the same and fit perfectly either the right way up, or upside down ! Don’t ask me how I know ;-) . You only realize it once you turn them on at night and notice it’s a search light for UFOs, as opposed to pointing down at the road, And yes, if you look carefully at them you can tell the difference but by just quickly glancing at the front of the car you might not .. embarrassed to admit this, but it can happen.

What I meant by upside down of course is installing the left lens where the right one belongs and vice versa ..which causes the fixed lights inside the lens to point up instead of down. I don't remember if the lenses have a L and a R marking on the lens itself, or if its marked on the inner casing ( I think its the latter ) but either way its indicated somewhere . I just did not pay attention because they looked exactly the same from the outside, so I thought they must be interchangeable ..   ( had to qualify that " upside down "  mounting statement to avoid someone looking at just one of their lenses and thinking...what is this moron talking about, you can't mount it upside down, the curved edge and the other straight edge only fits one way in that slot.  :glare:    ,, yeah, look at the other side  Wink   )   So if you buy just one lens make sure you tell them for which side.
