First experiances with E85on the 968 CS
#1

Hi there!

I thought this could be interesting for all of us to know so I started this new topic...

As you all know I am always looking for a possibility to get more power out of the 968. Everyboby knows that you will bite out your teeth trying to find some more power in this engine; A free-flowing exhaust will give you better response and more torque down low but not a significant gain up high, Airbox mods can be done but not done the right way will suffer from the engines heat and due to the lack of the stock ram effect, cams probably can make some (very little) power but as I experianced often with deep dips in the midrange.

That is why I decided to go the SC-road.

As the kit is not here completly yet and I am dammed to wait for the rest of the parts I started playing around a bit with what I got.

I always wanted to make an experiment with E85 which should be known by most of you. The reasons are simple:

- Relativly simple way of conversion

- availability of E85

- Alternativ fuel made of wood in Switzerland

- 104- 105 Oktan as a principal base for higher power

Sure the car would not only have to run on E85 but it should also make more power...

As I am a Medical Doc I have to take the tools I have to make all work. I sure know having full access on the 968's ecu would allow me to get out even better results, but I aint got it. But I did what I could all on my own...

- Installed the APEXi NEO

- Installed the big injetors of the SC kit

- installed a wide band sond

- filled up the tank with E85

- went for testrides, tuning and messuring with the GTech Pro RR

As I took bigger injectors I had to correkt the signal of the AFM down which indirectly makes the ecu fire more advanced ignition which goes in the direction of using the potential of the 104 octanes...

To get to the point:

The car now runs on E85 with no problems for some 600mls. Only thing, the car now no longer smells of gas but more direction wiskey..;-).

I was able to get out some more power as you see in the attached file of the torque curves of gas vs E85.

IMPORTANT: the units and the absolut hight of the values is complitly irrelevant, it is the difference of the two curves that matters!

The car feels more responsive, pulls stronger from over the whole band, especially above 3000rpm. The sound ov the engine is harder due to the indirectly advanced ignition. And most important, the car is faster!

- From 30 - 100km/h (about 18.6 - 62mls) in second gear 0.3 seconds faster

- From 40 - 140km/h (about 24.8 - 86.8mls) in third gear 0.5 seconds faster

This is not bad in my eyes for a homemade conversion and tuning...

As the SC conversion is still to come I will also try with the E85 and I am sure the car will love it...

So then, to be continued...

Best regards

I wish our E85 had a higher Octane rating, The one time I got gas with more than 10% ethanol the car was not as strong. I couldn't figure out what happened until I saw the sticker on the gas pump the next time I pulled in before pulling right back out.

Thet's very impressive - around 10% power increase from 4500 - 5500. Did you do anything else to the fuel system to cope with the E85? one of the biggest problems is that the alcohol breaks down natural rubber components, so seals and rubber hoses do not hold up very well.

I noticed the same thing. I believe our E85 has a lower BTU rating.

Mark:

Thats why I use bigger injectors. The specific energy content (dont know the right word in english) of ethanol is deeper than the one of gas / Benzin so you have to inject more fuel to get the same power. If you got the fueling right, you can advance ignition - due to the higher oktan of E85 - which then will give you more power...

Flash:

I always use Superplus Benzin which means 98 Oktan...

jpk:

No, I didnt do anything else to the things said above to cope with that kind of fuel. Personally I dont think it will be an issue. For many years now Benzin has up to 10% of ethanol to get higher Oktan ratings. And also in Brasil they drove "normal" cars witch no conversion kits already 20 years ago.

Sure I will take a look from time to time what the fueling lines do...

You need to watch for water accumulating and ethanol does mess with the rubber components. I first heard this from a person who repairs chain saws who has seen it since they started putting a minimum 10% ethanol in our gas. The head tech person at Porsche Club of America said that it was popping up in our cars as well.

98 RON is equivalent to about 93 Octane here in the U.S.

Hi Bozo

Well, the car is working right now as a NA engine. Unfortunatelly not all the parts for the SC conversion have arrived, so I still wait for them to come

I am by the way just beginning the E85 conversion on my EVO MR VIII. Therefor I got bigger injectors (750cc) a WALBRO fuelpump (255l/h). I have to change the wideband from the Porche to the MR, then I will install everything and start tuning the system. I am really looking foreward to the conversion due to the "green power" but also due to the higher output of the system. The EVO guys in the US usually see gains of about 40hp (starting at 380hp) due to the better cooling and higher octane rating of E85. So you are then able to run much more ignition advance (25° vs 11° @ 7000rpm for example)...

I will keep on posting if there is something new...

GP. Green Power

Did some drawings on this. (Well 944 is easy to change to 968)

If you like the drawings for vinyl cut and for yor car or.... pls give me an PM.

Kunz,

The airfilter and belt is on its way. Had a national backorder on those damn airfilters for months. It should be to you as I type this since I sent it as quickly as humanly possible. It would be interseting to see how this will work on E85.
