Hmmm, I wonder if Patrick Stewart ( aka Captain Picard to those of you who are Star Trek fans,.) posed for the World Cup logo, and is he getting paid royalties from that ?

Not a dumb question at all! Those hands represent all the FIFA directors that have their hands all over the organizing of the World Cup so they can fill their Swiss bank accounts! I love the World Cup but FIFA is a band of thieves.

To my fellow American 968ers, congratulations on the USA win...

but the team has to improve the offense, otherwise they will be coming home soon....

Congrats USA! Hopefully, with the Portugese crippled, you make it to round 2!

5 hours until the Belgian squad makes it appearance... Can't wait!

If Altidore does not recover from the hamstring injury the hurdle for the US just got a lot bigger.. and there will be a million and one people blaming Klinsmann for the Donovan decision , since Donovan would ( arguably ) have been a suitable substitute for Altidore..

The game yesterday was a sweet victory, particularly since Ghana is the team that knocked the US out of advancing in two different world cups ! But in all fairness their two best players ( Essien and Boateng ) were mysteriously benched . Lucky for us :-) :-)

There is a LOT of expectation here in Brazil as to how Belgium will perform. The team has been touted as the surprise team of the tournament. With Holland and Germany performing well in the first round, nothing less than an exceptional performance will satisfy the die hard fans of the "beautiful game"!

Bizarre, I expected a goal fest / massacre by Belgium . Nice comeback from a shocking lead by Algeria, but still... these teams are in completely different " leagues " this should have been a 5-1 type of match .. Maybe they're just calibrating in their first game in preparation for what's to follow

Congrats Belgium...

But the on field display was far below what we all expected. Hopefully Belgium will perform better against opponents that play a bit more open. I hate teams that play defensively.

Let's go Brazil!!!! Game in an hour...

Brazil 0 x 0 Mexico

The Brazilian crowd I was watching the game with are very disappointed and have lost all confidence in the national team. The Mexican goalie was the hero of the game.

Go Holland Go - game tomorrow.

Vertonghen and his stupid, stupid mistake was the reason the match was far too close than should have been... Our players are young and this is their first WC, but there is no excuse for such a mistake... Hopefully this was the first and last time.

I just want to add this: our team did not meet expectations, BUT our goalkeeper was pretty much bored out of his mind and Algeria played very defensively, as a solid block. Pretty hard when trying to breach a wall of 10 players.

That being said: the individual talent is certainly present, but football IS a team sport, so, as Jake said, hopefully they can show off their talent against people who actually want to play.

Mexico played much much better than I thought they would. Considering it took a gift from the USA to even get them to the WC, they sure held their own against one of the best teams in the world.

Also, did anyone see that Switzerland is ranked 6th according the FIFA rankings??? Does FIFA do anything that isn't completely corrupt or crazy?

Socceroos played hard and made the game entertaining. I love a wide open game.

Newsflash to all teams' defense coaches and to all the defensive players who apparently have been living in a cave or a deserted island in recent years : Robben cuts to the inside, moves three meters to the left ( or to your right if you're the defender ) and sets up the shot for his left foot. Invariably, he will then score. Take note, 'cause he's only been doing this 90% of all plays, for as long as he's been on the field practically..
