since dave shut down, i have been considering knocking these off - i know the material source, and have one i can use as a template - i just didn't think there was much market anymore

I would like to have one. I have the upper piece but not the lower.

I have been looking for some stainless mesh make a lower grill.

I also thought about making an upper grill from stainless as well. But I need to make a forming buck first.

yeah - that is really the part that has delayed me - but, i saw the original one, and know i can duplicate it, soooo.........

i would also be able to get these powder coated, which i might do for myself anyway - i've had to touch these that i have now up a few times because they are only painted

I have braided, stainless steel upper and lower grill pieces which were made by Doug Foster (doster on this site). They are much stronger than the aluminum ppieces which I had from 968 engineering and look better to me too. Don't know how to post pictures here, but email me and I shall attach the pictures in my reply. Give Doug a chance and he may make a set up for you, Bob Blackwell.

I installed the 968engineering lower a few years back. It still looks great. One thing I like about a metal solution down there is flexibility. You are going to ground the front spoiler on occasion. The plastic OEM breaks. The aluminum bends and you just bend it back.

I had a spot of trouble installing. When I removed the lower bumper/grill I found that the very end connectors were not screws like the rest, but instead were rivets. I had a heck of a time getting it off and then had to have a shop tap the ends to do a screw solution. No big deal, just a bit of a puzzler.

It was 'interesting.' At first I feared that it might reflect front end damage repair but there were no other signs. In fact the fasteners, both rivet and screw, all looked to be original patina with no wrench marks. All other front end stuff was also correct and unmarked/unmoved.

This for me was just more evidence of the somewhat sporadic assembly process that went into the 968 line. Porsche was cutting corners trying to save money/stay afloat and many cars seem to just have interesting individual quirks. Best example of this is the wide variety of stereo/amplifier set ups that are all grouped under the 490 option.

This is no cut on the overall build quality of these cars - it is fabulous and in some ways these and the 993s are the last really craft-made Porsches. I just think things just got a little weird in Zuffenhausen at times in the mid-90s.

very aston main looking - what is the percentage of open area in that mesh? it looks pretty tight

that is one of the things that helped the intake mod in my car a lot - the stock upper grille is very restrictive, and the one i have now is very open - the stock lower grille is not bad, but again the mesh i have is more open - it did help speed up the radiator recovery time, and helped stabilize the cooling system temps

The mesh is 1/4 inch size and plenty of air gets through. It is very strong and has survived several shunts with track cones at speed. I love it! Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

hmmm - it looks pretty closed, like maybe 50% open - may be the camera angle - i wonder what that is

i know i picked up a couple of ponies at high speed when i changed grilles, but the biggest difference was in the stability of the cooling - a good amount less swinging of the needle

as an example of how easy it is to screw up air flow, when i first had my bra modified to fit the new contours of the front bumper cover, i put screen door mesh in in the area down below in front of the radiator and it raised the running temp almost 10 degrees - i yanked that out in a hurry

I too would like an oval perforated aluminium mouth grille...exactly like the 968 engineering type.

I have received a message today from Dave who intimates he may consider making up a few more IF he gets many enquiries. Perhaps later in the year.

SO..........It's up to us ... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Has anyone questioned how to access the towing-eye with the upper grille fitted ?

You "unfit" it. Hopefully, you don't have to do that too often.

Not sure what the exact %open area is, but this style mesh is used by the C5 Corvette Z06, which produced 405 hp, as well as by a number of high performance cars, so I can't imagine it being too restrictive. I've also seen it on a lot of race cars.
