Temperature Gauge going up and down
#1

This has started to happen about a week ago. When I've been driving for a while, out of nowhere, the temperature gauge goes all the way up all of a sudden, stays there for a while (it varies every time) and then goes back to normal. It happens on and off and for different periods of time. It really only happens when the weather is warmer. But the way the gauge just flips up, it seems to me like the gauge is messed up in some way. Checked the oil level and coolant and everything is good. I don't know why the gauge is doing this. Any suggestions? I hope it's nothing serious. Thanks

Is this the only gauge that's acting up? Sometimes poor grounds can cause the symptoms you're seeing, but I would think other gauges would also be acting up if this were the case. I believe the gauge pod is fairly easy to remove; you might want to take it out (do a search for instructions on how to do this - hopefully somebody has post something on it), clean up all the connections to the temp gauge, and see if the problem goes away. The temp gauges on these cars have been known to act up. Good luck.

I had a bad ground condition on my 944S, which also contributed to dim/yellow dash lighting in addition to the aforementioned flaky temperature gauge.

No it's not the only gauge that's acting up. The speedometer gauge has been acting up since I bought the car. The speedometer doesn't move until I reach a speed of 40MPH or I tap the plastic window that's protecting the gauges.

Then it does sound like you may have a grounding issue. I don't have any direct experience with this, but I would suggest doing a search, as it's a fairly common problem with these cars. When you put it all back together, there's a spray made by CRC that's designed to protect electrical connectors from future corrosion. I use it on any connectors I reassemble. Good luck.

could also be the gauge sender in the block - it's about smack dab in the middle looking down through the gap in the intake tubes - the connectors are standard spade type, and are known to develop corrosion, especially on the east coast
