Dunno where to put this. But I guess chips and engine managment would fit.



Anyways, has this been done? And if so, what needed to be done to make the car run on E85?

Would it be able to work with 98 octane as well as the E85? I can get both 98 and E85, and E85 is so stupid cheap compared to 98 so I's love to be able to use it.

Due to the corrosiveness of E85, the whole fuel system would have to be changed to accommodate it. Fuel lines, tank, pump, rail, injectors, ect. Then you would have to calibrate the fuel curve because you use more of it than gas for proper combustion. Other than the higher octane number and being earth friendly I see no benefit. If you get 24 mpg on gas you will see that reduced to 20 or less. E85 has less BTU's per gallon than gas so the fuel economy goes down as a result. I've used it in several vehicles here and don't see a whole lot of benefit to undertake a conversion.

on a car set up for it, it's less expensive to run. as stated though, the power is down, unless you alter things to make up for it. the higher octane opens the door for more timing advance, but i'm not sure that our engine would benefit from it. the costs to modify the car to accept it would likely far outweigh the cost reductions in operation. i think this is a bit like buying a $30k car that gets 30mpg to replace one you already own that gets 15mpg. it would take 25 years for that to break even.

you're probably looking at about $6k to alter the car to accept it. based on 10k miles per year, at $3.50 per gallon, factoring in the 20% reduction in fuel economy, it would take 6 years to break even

Gas is around 16NOK per liter and E85 is around 6-8NOK

16NOK x 3.785 Liters per gallon= $9.08US Vs. 7NOK x 3.785= $3.97US Ouch!!

given how much timing advance there is already in our maps, and the fact that we have limited variocam adjustability, i'm not sure how much of the power loss we could make back. the fuel cost is obviously lower, but would it be worth the power loss? seems at odds with the intention of the car. might as well get a 944.



a 951 would probably be a better candidate for E85.

I fill the 968 with "Entertainment/Hobby" budget instead of transportation budget, I feel better...
