Durametric Purchase Information
#1

Any recommendations for a competent 968 mechanic / reputable shop in Orange County ( the southern half of OC preferably ) in California ?   Los Angeles is too far, and even San Diego is way out for just basic services .

Thanks Petethepug.

After an exhaustive search , I finally discovered Pinnacle Auto , in Lake Forest . .  ( formerly named Lansing Racing , although they still have that component to their business ) . They have fixed a bunch of things on my 968 recently , they seem very competent , BUT,  their diagnostic tools are useless on cars this old,  so unless you have a durametric, or, unless they can diagnose the problem by troubleshooting without the need for a diagnostic tool, they won’t be able to help . Unfortunately I do have a durametric , but the app no longer supports the old software and the link up cable so I pretty much need a new durametric.  There is also a Porsche dealership in Ontario which has  a “classic car “ repair shop, if I can’t use Pinnacle for some reason  but surprisingly they don’t have a diagnostic tool either .  What kind of old cars are they working on ?!  Ugh !

Superfantastic. Excellent info. It gives a pulse on finding a guru who’s potentially an enthusiast as well as a tech. Got a link for durametric that would also sell the latest incarnation of it?

There may be other members in SoCal who could ( hopefully ) benefit from the info .   I didn’t keep the search results , but I’ll look it up again, I just remember that it was very difficult to source and quite pricey .

This is the only one I could find  : https://www.ebay.com/itm/285252502250 advertised for either rental , or , purchase .

I’m not a “rent this” kinda’ guy ..and I hesitate to spend $ 650 on a used tool.

There were two other durametrics which popped up but they cannot be used on 968s, they were only made for years 1996 and later .

Not bad at all. A referral to a good tech and an even better one to the diagnostic tools the tech should be using. The last Porsche I owned was back in 90. Purchased a grey market 914-6 in 88 from Jeff at Canyon German off Laguna Canyon Road. It ended up getting a 2.7 w/ Webers installed by a crack Taiwanese mechanic named V who worked at the Texaco station where the Ortega hwy ended next to Mission San Juan Cap. V was a former Merc employee in Germany.

Ill likely end up purchasing the tool from the rental place on eBay. I cant tell you how nice it is having a the black 968 with a/c this time around. Sitting 5 in front of a boiling 2.7 in a black 914-6 with no a/c was fun and highly recommended.

Stumbled into Durametric website

https://www.durametric.com/support.aspx

They are a professional company answered by a human on the 2nd ring. Its now run by (only) the owner himself. His employee of 17 years retired last month. I had the pleasure of speaking to Durham, the creator and owner who is now in Oregon.

For the 968 all Ill need is the software and standard diagnostic cable totaling $379.00. Durham is a wealth of knowledge and a one man company. Im f he doesnt pick up the line or answer an email its because hes the only one running the ship.

He passed along a little tidbit of info that approx mid 93 Porsche added a security measure in the key that communicates to a module by the fuse box that turns off a kill switch to the car.

If you connect Durametric to these later 968 it will not communicate. The vehicle had to be running and/or turned off after that to shake hands with the software. Got an older version of his product that no longer works. He said hell help you grandfather it and get ya up and going again.

I should have pasted the screenshots above with the eBay logo and the sellers business name but hadnt used them before. $649 is for the eBay site.

$379 is the direct price from Durametric but only for the 968 and not for the professional programming version.

The software which is compatible with the 94 968 is no longer available . I have the cable , but it will not communicate with my software .  Maybe I’ll contact Durham ( thanks for that info ! ) for guidance as to what to get .

Thanks, good to know !   I’ll have to plug in my durametric one more time so I can see precisely what message I’m getting from the software , to make sure I convey the exact details to him when we speak .

Good idea, any chance you can remove the posts re the durametric from here and migrate them to the new thread ?

The Durametric specific for use on a 968 arrived. Nice little ABS case. Fired up the laptop to download the SW. The laptop is bricked. It was a hand me down from past employer. No big deal. Ill give Durham a call on Monday to get a recommendation for a good preloved brand of what he recommends.
