Driveline knock
#1

Trying to diagnose a driveline knock that occurs when applying and letting off throttle, worse in first and second gears. It remains faint but I can tell it is slowly getting worse and will soon bother me. The mechanic who looked at the car pretty much ruled out the clutch or transmission making that knock, his main suspicion was the torque tube. My car is a 1992, I remember reading about the early split design, anybody experienced this?

I would check transmission mount first. The slight rocking of the transaxle as the car shifts from power on to power off could be responsible for the noise. The engine also torques from left to right as power goes on and off, so engine mounts (a known problem on these cars) could be shot and allowing something to contact the torque tube tunnel or even the exhaust system. Have someone watch the movement of the motor as you go try to go forward and reverse while holding the brake.

Pro tip: Have then stand off to the side to minimize the chances of getting run over.

I enquired further and found the approximate provenance of the knock. I jacked up the car and had someone watch through the clutch inspection hole while I turned by hand the torque shaft through the window at the back of the tube, it is definitely knocking with a slight play at the clutch (very minor but seems abnormal to me and produces the knock I was reporting earlier). Obviously now I'm fearing a bad flywheel. I get none of the other symptoms of a bad DMF, but I can't think of anything else. Any ideas?

Just uploaded a video peeking through the starter hole while someone rocks (by hand) the torque shaft from the rear of the torque tube. Hoping to hear from you guys.
