Do the math
#1

I went to fill up the cruiser today at Costco. The price was a mere 2.19/gal. The line clearly showed that this was the cheapest gas in the area (avg price in my part of MD is 2.38/gal) This Costco line was 6 lanes across and traveled about 7-8 cars back, turned the corner then traveled another 4-5 cars in each lane. As I pulled in and waited I sat there thinking, how long is this going to take? The line behind me continued to build. I looked across the street at shell and the sign read 2.43 reg. There were 2 cars at the station.
hmmmmm...
16 gallons @ 2.19 = 35.04
16 gallons @ 2.43 = 38.88

I'm guessing I would have wasted 20 minutes minimum of my life in that line to save that $3.84. Now this is an extreme! I know people who, in most cases, drive past several stations ranging between 2.40 - 2.43 to go to the one that has gas for 2.35 Time is far to valuable. Not to mention, it felt good to pull in, gas up and go while my fellow costco members have only advanced about 3 cars up.

BTW- I should also factor in that I'm a Amex card holder as well, this means I get 3% back on Costco gas purchases. It adds up. So I will continue to go to Costco but only the one in Arundel mills where there seems to never be a line.

Generally speaking, I refuse to stand in line to save money, especially for things like gasoline, coffee or any other of lifes little necessities. Time is money, if you make your living as I do as a consultant. It doesn't help that I'll be turning 62 shortly and I am begining to hear footsteps behind me. The bucket list ain't getting any shorter

I do not check prices. I get gas when I need it.
If spend an extra two bucks, big deal.

I'm not sure about Costco, but the Sams Club in Albuquerque uses really high ethanol gasoline, which always makes my cars run terrible and get bad milage. I don't think it's worth saving 8 cents a gallon. I stick with 91+ octane gas (for the 968) that I know is good and close to home. Besides, there is something about that parking lot that makes people's IQ drop 40 points.

I haven't noticed that in my neck of the woods.

In the 68 I now use chevron 93. Actually I have Dan to thank for that. As I read around and commonly heard that all gas is the same I kept stumbling across exceptions. Shell and Chevron always made that list with Chevron often beating out Shell as it adds more cleaning agents or detergents.

For the most part Gasoline is very cheap in New Jersey. In South Jersey I get regular for 2.08 a gallon at wawa for my truck. No lines. There is a lot of these stations in ocean county. I try to stick with the cheapest gas vs mileage for my truck since I travel alot of miles. I can keep an eye on my gas mileage closely to see if i'm in a good range. I see a big difference from station to station. There is some real crap out there. The $$$ add up when you drive as much as I do. As far as my 968 I try to stick with the good stuff whatever it costs.
