Digital Ambient Temperature Gage
#1

In my 1995 coupe to the left of the glove box is a digital ambient temperature guage. It is dark almost not able to be read. Is this part still available and how does one change it? I would assume I would have to pull the glove box but maybe someone knows a trick to avoid pulling the box? I called Pelican Parts and the part number is 944 641 223 00 01C and they say it is no longer available. Same answer at Sunset. Does any one know of a Junk Yard that specializes in Porsche parts?

On another thought would any other brand of display work on the car such as a radio Shack digital display? This is a question to the electrical gurus.

I did call a number of Used Car places, but thanks for that idea. Unfortunately what I found out was the following. The original part, now discontinued was a piece of junk, and failed all the time. Maybe that is why Porsche does not sell them anymore. I found a used place who had some but due to the high rate of returns actually had discontinued selling them as he could not guarantee them, and he threw the rest out. He suggested trying to find a new source as in Radio Shack or guage companies that made one that was a similar size. Then trying to adapt it to the wiring in the 968. That is why I asked for the electrical guru's of the group to come up with an alternative.

Pull it out and check all the solder points on the circuit board. I replaced mine with a used one, but after I pulled out the old one I noticed one of the solder points failed, which was probably it's issue.

You do not need to pull the glove box but you do need to pull the trim piece. You also have to pull the cover off the HVAC control unit to expose the left most screws and mounting tab. That's what breaks most of the time. Wires will be tight, but everything is right there.

The display guage is NLA from what I've heard as well. North Hollywood Speedometer would probably be able to repair them. As for parts places, do a search and there are a few Porsche dismantlers that will come up.

In a related question. My thermometer keeps switching to Celcius...I push the button and it goes back to Farenheit. Someone remember how to correct this? A fuse if I recall???

I'd just try some contact cleaner first, could be the Celsius button is making intermittent contact. All else fails trade your clock with someone in the rest of the world (except Britain?), we are all Metric <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Mine is also only reading in celcius. I'll have to try using some contact cleaner. Thanks.

I'm betting you celcius folk will find some bad solder points on the board...

My display switches off when the headlights are activated, I assumed Porsche designed it that way to not distract you while night driving. Once the headlights are off the display comes back on, but in celcius.

Is this not normal behavior?

That's not how mine works. It's on all the time, in F or C as selected.

I'll have to check Fuse 11 again, but as I recall, I replaced it once, and the gauge turned back to Fahrenheit on request. Problem solved, right? Not so fast - a few days later, it reverted back to its permanent Celsius mode, even though Fuse 11 was still OK. [Image: blink.gif]

When headlights are activated there is a bulb which turns on, yours (nad mine) are probably burned out.

I do not understand your comment. On my 1995 968 is a plastic cover that I will call the dash board and it covers many switches. Going from left to right is the 4 way flasher, the ambient temperature guage with the Celsius button a piece that says temp. and the Fahrenheit button, the cigarette lighter, a 1 inch round grill ( I do not know what this is for) the glove box knob release button, and a air outlet with a directional slider.

The ambient guage is behind this solid dash board piece. so How does one get access to the guage?

You need to remove the plastic piece below the dash and above the glove compartment, in which the temperature gauge is located. Be careful, because they tend to break, especially on the left side.

The bulb is easy to change...once you get the display removed from the plastic trim piece! William, give me a ring/PM and I will be happy to talk you through it.

"what's wrong with Celsius?"

lol - nothing. In fact, I've kind of grown to enjoy the novelty of it.

That 1" round grille has the air intake for the climate control. There is a rubber tube attached to the other side and it feed ambient cabin air into the controls. To remove it you have to put a pair of needle nose into 2 of the slats and gently rotate the grille, can't remember which way. it will just fall out after a small rotation and there is a Philips screw behind it that need removing to release the trim piece in that area.
