I have a '94 cab with about 105,000 miles on it. It has the manual transmission with LSD. I'm working through the list of maintenance and taking care of little issues to get the car where I want it. In this process, I've run into a shifting-related issue and I'm not sure whether it is the transmission, the clutch, or a little of each.
There are a few things that are happening:
1) When I go to shift gears and am moving the transmission out of gear there is more initial effort to get the car out of gear and into neutral. I'm not sure exactly how to describe it, but it's like a certain amount of resistance to overcome before the car will disengage the gear and the level of effort required is noticeably more than any other vehicle I've driven.
2) There have been a couple instances where I've parked the car - once on more-or-less flat ground and once on a slight incline - and left the car in gear (once in first, once in reverse) while parked. When I've come back a short time later (within an hour) and attempted to drive away, getting the car out of the gear it was left in has been difficult to say the least. In the instance I parked it with the transmission in reverse, I was on level ground, and when it wouldn't come out of gear I assumed the car's mass was still pressing on the transmission, but even after partially engaging the clutch and moving the car a bit, it was still very, very difficult to get out of gear. It was a similar situation when I left it in first while parked on an incline.
3) When shifting into first, while moving, I have to take my time, otherwise I'm pretty much guaranteed to grind the gears.
A couple of other pieces of information: the clutch was replaced by the previous owner at about 70k, and the pinion bearing was done at the same time. This car does have a very loose shifter that I've read about other people having an issue with, but I haven't yet done anything transmission related with the car, so I can't say whether it is something in the linkage, or elsewhere. I've only taken a cursory look at the master and slave cylinders while working on other things, but didn't see any evidence of a leak for either.
My initial thought, when the only symptom I was running into was having to shift into first carefully, was that the synchro was toast and I'd be looking at having to take on that job. With the difficulty getting the car out of gear, it's made me wonder if there is something clutch-related, like it's not fully disengaging. I'm sure there are many more smarter people than me on this forum, so I turn to you for any advice or experience you can offer.
