dealer on crack ?
#1

this weekend, while shopping around for a car my son will use as a daily school commuter ( we got him a 2000 nissan altima ) on one of the lagre dealer lots in San Jose's Auto Row I spotted a 944 with a $ 11,999 price tag on the windshield. Thinking this was clearly a renegade 944 with a Ferrari engine in it I checked it out only to find that it's an early model 85, with what looked to be 86,400 miles on it, exterior ok, interior somewhat average for that kind of mileage and I had to look at the price again to make sure they were not actually asking $ 1,199.99 for it.. No, they expect $ 12,000 for an early model 944 ! Some of you may recall, there was another dealer close to my house who wanted around $ 10,000 for a similarly crappy 944 which gathered dust on that lot for over a year.. and who knows what eventually happened to that one, but WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE ?! ARE THEY FROM ANOTHER PLANET ?

I was once the ass for the seat in a BMW 740iL, the most undependable car I ever owned.

I've been known to be an ass from time to time....but that's another story.

9 years ago I bought a used Mercedes as a daily from a dealer. The car had a crazy expensive price but it was the car I was looking for so I went in to check it out. I ended up with the car at about half the sticker which was still a bit high but made them throw in a warranty, etc. After the deal was done I asked what was up with the high price and the salesman told me I'd be surprised how often someone will walk in and pay sticker or close to it.

$11,999 is a crazy price. You never know how people will react when they are thinking from a emotional standpoint.

no kidding, I can just imagine some clueless individual really buying what would clearly be their first Porsche on pure emotion without any idea of its market value, they drive it home after getting "a great deal" with maybe $ 500 off that asking price and their son/daughter/spouse/neighbor points them to Craigslist and Ebay where they find a few hundred of these going for about for $ 3,000.

In fairness, the same can be said about the 968; I for one would have spent 3X the maket value buying mine without a second thought to what they may actually be going going for... The only difference is they're rarely seen and obviously not so easy to find. A regular 944 ( as opposed to the rare 944S/S2 ) would be a bit harder to justify buying on impulse because you'll never find another one like it..

Local used high-end European dealer has everything listed seemingly stupid high. But so many people buy cars like this on emotion alone it would be foolish not to. I know that the real price is much lower if I were interested and asked a few questions.

My rule: Never begrudge a man his profit, and if it is high at the expense of uninformed and impulsive consumers, then that is just Darwin at work. Dealers should be honest, they don't have to be fair. There is a difference. Now, if the car is in bad condition and they are hiding that, then that is a completely different issue.

In contrast to that one which seems ridiculously high, this seems like a good value:

Porsche 944 Turbo - $6800

163K mi but apparently in very good condition, a 10 minute drive from me if anyone is interested, I'd be happy to go check it out for you.

Ralph,

So well put. We've got a more than a few places like that around the Metro DC, NoVa, and MD areas as well. True, making a profit is one thing; fraudulent business deals is another.

I agree that it is bad business but, shouldn't a buyer do his home work before such a purchase?

I really have no pitty for an uneducated buyer in todays world.

It only takes 3 mins to check the book value.

Smokie...that's true too, but I think Ralph and I are are talking more about people who KNOW there's something wrong with a car and don't disclose it while trying to take advantage of an un-educated buyer because of the name badge on the car.

I guess no harm advertising the 968 for sale at $ 75,000.. ( on the street though, with a big sign on it, because online there are way too many other sources of reference for comparison ) Surely there's an idiot to be found somewhere out there who'll be convinced this is a fantastic deal. Ok, an idiot with appreciation for timeless beauty, but clueless otherwise..

That seems kind of high, would you accept $67,500 (see an educated buyer knows that the seller has built in 10% for negotiation)?
