Now that my European vacation is behind me, and the car has a new top (looks GREAT, photos when I can), I'm now getting the A/C system back into operation. Unmentioned earlier is that the adjusting strut that tensions the A/C belt had a non-critical failure, so that is also being replaced (thanks for the quick service, Jeff/Sunset). The mechanic at Princeton Porsche, where the car is today for recharging the A/C system, tells me that because the A/C system was open to the air for hours, it's likely that the drier/receiver will need to be replaced - but we'll see if applying vacuum for an hour or so brings it back sufficiently. If not, that'll have to be done at another time, as I couldn't get a new one in time for the appointment today - and I couldn't wait because we're going to Atlantic City for the weekend and if the 968 doesn't have functioning A/C, it won't be acceptable transportation.
An interim update - why does EVERYTHING have to be so complicated? One of the bolts I'd installed to hold the A/C compressor failed, so that work needed to be redone. And, the A/C system isn't holding a vacuum - so something else might have gone amiss. Maybe it's time to supercharge...
OK - this part of the saga is over - at least for now. It seems that in the heat of doing the repairs at the garage at Watkins Glen, one O-ring got lost and one got crushed. So, with new ones installed, and yet another compressor mounting bolt installed, the system is running in accordance with Porsche specifications.
With this behind me, I think I'll be able to turn to dealing with the airbag light and the mini-hammer.
