Cup Holder Idea
#1

Ok so my thought is...if one was willing to mutilate um - modify their dash and install cup holders.

First I am thinking about the space between the stereo and the climate control module. Second Audi owners

as I recall we have a few of you - what are your thought on the functionality of their in dash slide-out

cup holders? Also curious as to the dimensions - is it even feasible to put them there...And following up

on that for those of you that have had your dashes off - is there anything behind that space that would

inhibit filling that space with a couple of cup holders?

As a daily driver the only thing I find lacking in my car and any current option is the convenience of cup

holders. And yes I have one of the flip-down ones and even the cup pilot(hanging basket style)neither of

which I find to be that convenient or esthetically pleasing option. The flip-down is a reach to get to and

the pilot hits my knee when I shift (fine when I'm cruising on the freeway).

My other thought would be to modify the map pocket/speaker cover to have a cup bulge in the map pocket like

most cars have now a days...

Ok thoughts - just trying to start a little creative debate - don't expect the same response as to the legalizing

of drugs or not thread...

i have those pop out type cupholders in the SL550 - they are between the stereo and the climate controls

i HATE them there - in this case, they block the stereo, which makes it hard to operate - in the case of the 968, i'm not so sure i'd want liquid directly above my stereo

food for thought

there is a better installation of the flip down one, and as soon as i can remember who did it, i'll post about it - it moved the cupholder to a closer spot on the tunnel, making it a lot easier to reach

I have a "pop out" cup holder in my Saab. It has yet to break, and actually works fairly well. Don't know if this is what you were thinking, but it might give you some ideas.

Come on Sam, as tall as you are and complaining you can't conveniently reach the side flip down holder ?! Though I agree it could be tricky picking up or placing the cup there without taking one eye off the road while going triple digit speeds

Very Swedish.

I think your idea of modding the map pocket is a great one. You'd likely have to reform that entire piece as the existing is very flimsy.

I tried mounting holders made for Jeeps on my chassis brace. I couldn't tell from the pics what they were made from though. Turned out that they were soft (little insulated bags). I mounted them and we even used them to store pop cans, but they were useless for the driver. They are in the landfill now.

I've pretty much given up trying to keep something wet and open in the car. I've found that capped plastic bottles fit pretty well between the seat and the door. If I'm really thirsty I just drive faster.

Here's a hard side holder for a roll bar - might work.

Here's another one. It's for a 1" pipe, but could probably be modded. Swings around on a ball - wild stuff for a can of coke.

It's just real hard to beat The Wedge as far as function or price and when you don't want it around you just throw it in the back.

I've believe the co-pilot is the worlds best cup holder..............

I begrudgingly second the Wedge. I've sat in the car and purposely looked around for a great spot to hang a cup holder, and there's precious little room in the cockpit that isn't consumed by the pilot and the infrequent passenger. The only wide open spot is behind the driver's right elbow on top of the tranny tunnel, and that's not easy to grab a drink from. Hanging one on the door would be OK, until I got out and shut the door behind me, spilling the drink all over the place. My kids do it in the F-250 about once a month just to keep me charged up.

The combination of the shifter's range and the double-DIN stereo pretty much kill any option I'd have at the front of the console. No room at the right knee. I *do* have room under the front of the seat, either in the center or on the far right, for something that mounted across the seat rails,... Hmmm.

i believe the tunnel mount that flash speaks of looks something like this. backed by a thin stainless sheet with a mounting point at the forward cap screw that rings the shifter - much more reachable than mounting forward at the center console screw. not very invasive to passenger space but can be problematic if the passenger seat is pushed forward.

I'll "third" The Wedge. Works really well, and for five bucks and a three second installation, what's not to love?

When I want cup holders, I drive the Audi. With the suspension on my 968 I would need to get a 6 point harness for the cup! [Image: wink.gif]

the problem with the wedge is the passenger - normally i have one when i drive the car - the wedge puts the cup(s) in exactly the wrong spot

further, i want something more stable - as mrmister said, it would need a harness the way i drive

i also don't like the scuffs it can make on the leather - i have a hard enough time keeping the leather looking new

personally i think it also looks like some cheesy pep boys piece of junk - i stopped using that kind of stuff as soon as i could afford premium gas - the cupholder needs to be hard mounted, and congruent with the color scheme and installation methods of the car

but, at least it holds 2 cups, and i am still stuck for a second location that is not in the way of driving

Ok everyone thanks for the responses so far….Lets see if I can keep up

In this position they shouldn’t block the stereo – could even shade display

from the sun to make it easier to see…only blocks the hvac controls that

I use very infrequently. As to spill factor and the stereo that was the genesis

of my question as to experience with them – I’m not looking to hold a big gulp

or power size Jamba juice (ok maybe an original Jamba) or venti coffee or bottled

water…mrmister – then I can assume you like the audi cup holders?

As to the flip down and wedge – they look tacked on and require you to reach in

On your passenger – could be a good thing but most guys will shy away from you reaching for their legs or thighs….

The Saab is interesting (looks a little flimsy) and I don’t think there a space for it –

Maybe a flip out on the door?

As for the map pocket – yes I think you would probably have to remold the entire piece

I’m thinking a bulge just after the arm rest (with a cut out)

yeah - i don't really like the flip down ones either, but they have been the best looking solution so far, and since i have a two tone interior, with all the accents being black, they sort of fit aesthetically

i would worry about condensation from anything cold dripping down on the deck, but otherwise the location is perfect - good luck

I have to admit I have thought about trying the Audi one in the same place a few times after driving my S4. For now I use the wedge but I rarely have a passenger or a drink in my 968 so it really has not been an issue.

I bought the wedge, but it does not work with the sport seat side bolsters.

If you have a passenger couldn't they hold the drink? After all besides enjoying the wonderful pleasure of sitting in a 968, there aren't that many left, what else are they doing? Screaming as you whip around corners and roar past other cars!

Passengers make my car go slower and feel funny in the corners. Sometime they want to talk too Cup holder +1
