Hi Gang -



Planning to do some car-spiffing on the new (to us) 911SC this weekend. Got the polishing thing down, and Rejex of course, but what have listers found to be effective at cleaning, restoring and protecting vinyl, rubber, and plastic parts - rear bumper pads, bumper bellows, the "smile" on the front bumper, side mirror trim, etc?



I'm reluctant to use silicone products as they ultimately do more harm than good, and I can't stand the super-shiny look.



Anyone have suggestions?

I've always used 303 ( aerospace protectant ). Cheezy name, but great product IMO. Very happy with the results. Nice matte finish, none of that super shiny, sticky armorall crap. Excellent at protecting rubber, fiberglass, vinyl, even leather fom uv rays / fading ... and here's the real testimony: I had one of the very few non-cracked 944 dashboards after 18 years or so of driving that car.. maybe a coincidence, but I doubt it. I attribute it to the 303.





That, and the fact that the sun rays could not possibly penetrate the rhinestones embedded in that red velvet dashboard cover I had in the car. And no doubt luck brought by the miniature statue of St. Anthony glued on the center of the cover.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

This is not weird science, Dan, there is something to it. I bought mine from a marine supply store right across the street from Boeing Space Division in Huntington Beach. (they built the Space Station). The lady behind the counter said that engineers from Boeing came in on a regular basis to buy the 303.....

Funny I also buy mine at a marine products shop, because I can't easily find it elsewhere. But I just saw it now in places that sell hot tubs, pool supplies, etc.

It seems anywhere where the elements ( direct sun, water reflection, salt, and what not..) are harsh, the 303 might just be the remedy.

Is a West Marine the place you were thinking of, Dave? I have one about 3 miles down the road from me.



Anyway, gentlemen, thanks for the suggestions. I shall get both and let the wife decide...lest you be snickering right now, she's a fanatic - made a pilgrimage (in one day) to Marina del Rey from Reno to look at an SC before she decided on "Skippy" (named for his lovely peanut butter color) in Redwood City, wich we picked up yesterday. Oh yeah, and she's the social director for the Sacramento Valley Region of PCA.

My local PCA region prez - whose daily driver 928 GT took first place in the Preservation class at Parade two years ago - always recommends Vinylex when asked this quesiton.

i was using 303 and Son-of-a-Gun until this new stuff popped up - i like that 303 does not leave as much of a slick film as the new stuff, and still use it on some places, but the new stuff leaves a really nice shine on things i want to be shiny - i still use the 303 on things i don't want to be so shiny

i have been following the recommendations of robbins (the original manufacturer of the top) they say mild soap and water and a soft brush if necessary - i use novus on the back window when necessary - i never use any petrolium based products, or anything that could react with sunlight on the canvas - as a testament ot the success, my top looks almost new, and is still the original one

I use RaggTopp for my top but have heard decent things about the 303 top stuff. Whatever you choose to use make sure it is for canvas tops and not vinyl.

I use various things on my vinyl but use GummiPfledge from BMW for my seals.

I ordered the 303 kit which includes cleaner and protectant. I'll let you know how it does.

I use the Meguiar's #40 Vinyl Rubber treatment. It looks good, not too glossy. I also use black-again for the exterior rubber bumpers. It also works great but I'm told they changed the formula.
