Craigslist Scams
#1

As some of you know my 93 is for sale. I am keeping a couple of craigslist ads posted. From that route I've received double the number of scam attempts as real shoppers. Mostly I've ignored them, but the last one I decided to play with, and what a saga. I am going on day 20 with this yutz, and it seems there may be no end in site. Its been wildly entertaining, for me anyway, and I get this creepy feeling that my alter ego (likely in Nigeria or some other famous scammer's paradise) is enjoying it as well. I'd love to post this for your entertainment, but I want to be respectful of the core purpose of our forum - learning and sharing positive aspects of our cars. Clearly this is a negative aspect, and only related to the 968 as it was the original object of the ad.

So I leave it to you my forum mates to see if you are interested in reading my adventure with scammer michael, and ultimately leave it to the admins judgment.

I will give you $20,000.00 for your car. The only problems is I don't have money to get there as my father is sick and I am waiting on inshurance moneys to come. If just you can deposit 2,000.00 into my bank account so I can come pick up the car I will give you 22,000.00 when I am to arriving. No really!

I suppose with the millions of scam emails and other similarly crooked schemes out there it can be expected that Craiglsit would certainly get their fair share ( lately perhaps more than their fair share as it seems to be prevalent on that particular site ) so it pays to stay vigilant and take everything with a grain of salt, yet no matter how often this is in the news we still see some of these scams succeed and crimes perpetrated against the elderly, those who are inclined to be more trusting & naive, etc..
Last month there were three different people, locally, who were selling their cars, and/or answering an ad for a car on Craigslist and lured to a false address where the "prospective buyer or seller" supposedly lived, but soon as they got there they were attacked by a couple of thugs and robbed. Although neither Craiglist nor any site for that matter, can validate every single one of the millions of ads, you'd at least think they'd provide a general a stern warning , and maybe some with dos and dont's pointers when considering anything posted there.. since they clearly know the site does provide the opportunity for scams .

Yeah, I'd be interested to hear what that clown's "approach " is..

I wanna know. I had this guy try to rent me a house locally from Nigeria. LOL, I played along for a while just to see how far he would actually go. I got him to call me from Africa even. LOL, "just send me 3k, and ill overnight the key, and lease"....yeah right.

OK here we go. I've tried to keep the scammer and the seller responses clear. Buyer (scammer) is indented italics. My reponses are regular and not indented. Bear in mind that this is in response to an add for a black 968 listed at the time for $15K.

Hope you enjoy as much as I have.

Dear Michael,

My name and address are below.

Robert Johnson, M.D., Ph.D. J.D.
2560 Alijandro Way
xxxxx, TX 75115

$20,000

Thanks so much for your interest! This is my mother's car, and selling it is
really important to us she has been suffering from a devastating disease and we
need this money to keep her alive for another few months so that she can see her
grandson graduate from the Rangers. She loves him very much and he is very
protective of her. With all that special ops military training I am a little
worried about what he'll do when something happens to her.

Looking forward to the next steps.

Robert

Because i have move out miami now to Malaysia for the seminar. And after the payment or the check get clear from your bank.I will instruct the shipper to come to you and ship the car to riverside where i live.... So please let me know your view first ,before i can tell them to send it to you asap before friday.....

Michael.

17 Aug 2010
OK this sounds good. Could we make the price $25,000? This will really help me
with my mother's costs. You can send me a check for $35,000 and then I would
send your wife a check for $10,000. We both make out that way.

Quote:17 Aug 2010

emigrated to the US only 3 years ago. I have sent you several pictures. Have
you not recieved them?

Quote:25 Aug 2010

Thanks so much, i can see that there is no reason of sending you any check at all.Because you are just a game.I know that is why you can not a provide your phone number.....bye..............

25 Aug 2010
Dear Michael,

I do not understand. I don't have a phone number as I cannot hear well any
longer. Are you angry with me because I am from Nigeria? I have worked very
hard to come to this country and I am proud to have made it this far. My mother
is sick and I need to sell her car to help pay for her medical bills. I thought
we had an agreement but you have not received the pictures I have sent over
twice. I have tried again to attach the pictures here. I hope you can get them
and we can continue to make this sell.

Best regards,

Robert

RANDOM RED CAR PICS INSERTED HERE

Quote:25 Aug 2010
why are you behaving this way?
you sent a car pictureof blusbenz, but now another which is red...what is going on?tell me the truth of reality..bewarn !!!!!

25 Aug 2010
I don't understand bewarn? What does this mean? I don't know how to send the
pictures so I have asked my grandchild to do that. He is sometimes trying to be
funny, which he is not. I'll ask my eldest son (the military boy) to help. He
has no humor only guns so he will send the right pictures. He is home later
today and I have him help me thnn.

Quote:26 Aug 2010
It's like you dont understand me.I SAID THE CAR PICTURE YOU SENT EARLIER WAS COLOUR BLUE WHICH IS NOT THE MAKE AS THE RECENT CAR PICTURES.Ok, let me ask you ,how many cars do you have for sale?bewarn and becareful...

26 Aug 2010
I am sorry that this is confusing. I tried to explain that my grandson put the
pictures on the email and i think he was trying to be a funny guy, which he is
not. My Marine son with many guns but no humor put the good pictures on my
lastest mail from yesterdays. I only have this one car for sale I am not a
dealer, but I could probably get more cars if you like as I have made many good
friends in my Compton neighborhood. Sometimes I am surprised at how nicely
thier cars are for such a poor area. I guess they work very hard and save their
money well.

Glad you enjoyed it. I've not heard from my new friend for a few days now. Either the Nigerian or Compton reference seems to have confused him. I'll try to sweeten the pot a bit.

wasted? I guess I'll take that as a compliment. In the American vernacular "wasted" typically refers to extraordinary inebriated.

lol! yes I meant 'wasted' as in very talented beyond your chosen profession!, indeed a compliment sir, but the english, vernacular doesn't travel too well sometimes across the pond . ( a similar thing happened when I once said I was desperate for a fag) an American friend gave me a strange look!

I only wanted a cigarette
