coupe lifting roof troubleshooting
#1

I have a 94 coupe that allows the roof extension and locking mechanism to translate the latches for top removal to the disengaged position when the vehicle is in motion. This allows the aft edge of the roof to float free at speed. The safety logic stopping the roof at the closed position when moving but allowing the mechanism to release when stationary is not working correctly.

Can someone provide the logic tree for the G21 lifting roof relay?

Roof functionality changes with accessory power, tach input, etc (from what I can tell in the wiring diagram) in order to prevent the aft roof latches from disengaging when in motion. That is, roof can go up when moving but retainment for roof removal can only be disengaged when not in motion.

Thanks for your help.

it sounds like the microswitches on the motor are not making proper contact - there are two of them on the motor itself that make contact as the arm rotates and they tell the motor to stop at the right place - i had the same problem of it continuing to "close" past the lock point, completely unlatching them. bending the microswitch contacts back into place so they made contact at the right spots fixed it - it took me a few hours of troubleshooting to figure out, but could adjust them in only a few minutes now. i followed the guides on clark's garage (www.clarks-garage.com) for sunroof repair to learn about the whole system.

Blau,

Thanks for the tip. Should be easy enough to resolve since everything works but he lock limit.

I'll report back on findings.

I found the bracket that holds the micro switches for the close and release function was not properly installed. it is a tongue that engages a slotted stamping in the motor mount bracket. the bracket would let the switches float out of engagement. the open limit microswitch was loose on its mount. in the end it was simple stuff.

A "while you're in there": you can renew the white cogs that operate the sunroof, the plastic gets (as always it seems) brittle over time and the teeth will come off.
