Corvette museum now has a basement
#1

Eight cars moved to basement the easy way. This happened this morning. The museum is in a cave region and may soon be on the cave tour.

I heard about that this morning. Freaky. I wonder how long it will take them to determine if they will be able to pull the cars out, and how?

Speaking about Corvettes, a co-worker with a C6 Z06 sent this to me. It's from a Corvette forum, but it's a comparison test by a British publication of the new C7 Vette to a trio of high end European GTs.

http://www.corvetteforum.com/articles/br...opes-best/

I've never considered myself a Corvette person, but I have to say, this new one is very impressive. The Corvette has long been a great numbers car - 0-60, lap times, and the like - but what I keep reading about the new one is that it's much more than that - it's extremely livable, provides great feedback through the steering, and is very forgiving and enjoyable to drive. And it probably gets the best gas mileage of the group tested in the video. If I were in the market for a $50K+ high performance sports car/GT (which I most definitely am not - I can crawl along at 5 mph in bumper-to-bumper traffic in my ten-year-old BMW 3 Series automatic just fine, thank you), the new Vette would definitely be at the top of my list. In fact, considering how great the new one is, the ones that fell in the sink hole might as well stay down there, lol.

Seriously, I wonder how many sales the new Vette will take away from people who have historically purchased European exotics.

Funny Cloud, I almost posted this as well. Looks like it took Chevy only 60 years to get it right.

Yeah, and did they ever. To me, Corvettes were always too big, too noisy, too crude. The new one isn't any smaller than the last, but it really looks like a first-rate supercar now, at a huge savings compared to its European counterparts.

Chris Harris drove and compared the new Vette and the 991. Interesting observations. I believe it's on the Porsche email newsletter!

While it's looks better than it has in recent years, I think the rear end of the new Vette is still downright fugly.

Still don't trust the GM build quality though, they already have issues with the valve train in the new motors and heater core issues that require a half day disassemble of the inside of the car, and electronics issue. I also can't see them totally fixing the interior cheapness issue.

To me, the new Vette looks like ... a Vette. It's just the natural evolution of the theme that has been around for decades. To change it too radically would just be wrong, whether you're a Vette lover or hater. As far as the back end, I agree that it's not the best looking thing - I like the C6's better - but given the reported driving dynamics of the car, I think I could get used to it.

Looks like this whole building is going to go. Do ask someone to drive the undamaged cars out? Yikes. "For Sale, Rare Corvette. Well below current auction. Museum Quality. You must be willing to pick-up yourself. Will not ship. Hurry, this is a time-bound sales agreement".

I've never owned a Corvette. I had an old 64 Corvair when I was 21 - funny thing is that floor board would up looking a lot like the museum.

Funnily enough, I drove by the museum with my parents yesterday afternoon. We almost stopped, as my dad had owned a 1967 Corvette convertible. Unfortunately we were racing to get ahead of this winter storm, so no chance.

I wonder what the profit margins are like on both the 991 and C7... I got the feeling Chevrolet isn't making a lot of money on each Vette, whereas Porsche probably tries to keep the 911 'exclusive' by overpricing the car and optional goodies even more.

Cool - let us know. I've ridden in a few older ones, and have always found them to be very noisy (and not in a good way) and often rattly. I'd be curious to hear your impression as to whether the new one is easier on the ears.

I rode in, and drove a friend's 2006 ( IIRC..could have been '05 ) but at the time the car was less than a year old, and the damn thing rattled and squeaked like crazy on streets which had a few cracks and small pot holes, in general not perfectly paved surfaces... awful. But I hear good things about the new one. We'll see. ( It's not in the parking lot today though, so maybe later this week )

p.s. crappy and shaky as it may have been, it was STUPID-FAST !!

The Vette wasn't at work today either, with my luck it was probably a visitor and I won't have a chance to test drive one anytime soon.

Unless of course I go to a dealer but then I'd have to first stop by a thrift shop and pick up a satin "members only" jacket, a big belt buckle and also glue on a mustache, so I can blend in with all the other owners

Lol - true enough. But with the reviews the new one is getting, I wonder how much of that image stuff is going to change. Probably not dramatically, but if, and this is a big if, the new model lives up to the early reviews, you could see a lot of potential 911, Audi R8, Aston Martin, and possibly ever Ferrari and Lamborghini buyers crossing over. Come to think of it, is that really a good thing for the Corvette's image?

IMO, I can see Lamborghini drivers possibly crossing over to the Vette, maybe a few of the R8 owners also, but the rest are probably "purists" ( at least self proclaimed ones ) who would refuse to drive a Vette just on principle.

I would have completely agreed with you, until I saw the video I linked in my first post on this thread. Again, I've never been a "Corvette guy", but this new one really seems to be something special, maybe enough to draw people away from even brands with the most fiercely loyal customers. But I have to say that the C6 gave a similar first impression with all the car magazines, only to fade when put head-to-head with other high end GTs. It will be interesting to see how the new one does once the newness has worn off a bit.
