Correct thermofan switch for 968
#1

Still having a problem with my cooling fans, or at least the one on the left, switching on and off, and not necessarily in response to the engine temp gauge. So I am contemplating a new thermofan switch. Examining the offerings on eBay, I note that there are switches available showing both two- and three-pole connectors advertised for the 968. I looked into the application of one three-pole unit said to be for the 968 and found listings for dozens of VWs and Audis, but not the 968. In fact, a followup query to the same site said the switch did not fit the 968. So is it a two or three pole? The directions I read for replacement of the switch recommends removing the front under pan, draining down the radiator a bit, removing the fans and their housing, and then requires a 1 1/8" deep socket. Those directions were for a late 944, however. Finally, exactly where is the thermofan located on the radiator/

the switch is located immediately below the upper radiator hose.

29mm socket to remove

3 wire switch with 2 circuits.

there are a couple of switches from which to choose, depending on where you want the fans to come on. most of us run the 85/93 switch, as opposed to the 92/102 oEM unit.

It doesn't sound like a fan switch problem - first check the fan resistors under the black plastic shroud near your passenger side windshield wiper for corrosion around the connectors. When one of them isn't working properly then the second one overheats which causes the fans to oscillate frequently between high power and low power.

First to address the topic - the original thermo fan switch for the radiator is Porsche part number 951-606-481-00. My original one was proudly made in Germany, however, I was not able to decipher the manufacturer's name from the logo. If you don't want to stick to the Porsche original product the replacement is being made by Wahler, Facet, Febi and other companies. The switch is VW/Audi product fitting Audi 2.5 TDI and various VW Golf and Passat engines. Replacement VW product code is 251 959 481. I purchased the one made in Italy by Facet (EPS brand). Product barcode 1.850.626, ID "thermo fan switch", cost EUR10.

Second - electrical trouble shooting guide by John in the Forums DIY library is the best thing trying to diagnose electrical issues relating to the cooling system. Followed it step by step, eliminating possible causes and ended up with a faulty thermo switch. After replacement all is back to normal, cooling fans kick in at a low speed and no more climbing of the white arrow above 9 o'clock mark on the dash.
