there has often been aksed the question "what is the red wheel stud for, and why is it important to mount the wheel with the valve opposite it?" - it talks about it in the owner's manual, but has no explanation - well. in searching for something else, i found it



the red wheel stud is there to tell you where to mount the valve stem and locking nut (opposite the valve stem) - the early locking nut were heavier - they set this procedure up for reasons of balance - this entered in with the cup design wheels (it even says so in the workshop manual) - they also say that the later style lock nuts are virtually the same weight as the regular nuts, so this is not so much of a problem, but they still tell you to do it for reasons of optimum balance



it is all referred to on pages 44-03 and 44-04 of the manual

I thought you would have opted for "in the trash can".



I plan to replace mine with normal factory lugs in the near future.



A neighbor had the key portion of the locking lugs on his Boxster bend. It was very difficult to get the last locking lug off.

lol - well, close - mine are on in a box on a shelf - i dumped the factory lugs (also in a box) in favor of steel lugs so i can take the car out on a track (rules requirement - no aluminum or titanium lugs allowed - steel only)



i was just finally able to come up with a real explanation of the mysterious red lug and its purpose and thought i would post it

Which steel lugs did you use? Someone I had talked to recomended steel Vanagon lugs, but was not sure they would fit a 968.

the ones that HRE gave me with my wheels - they knew what i was planning, and set me up accordingly
