convertible choices 968 vs Elise vs 328

[quote name='porsche' post='56078' date='Jul 9 2008, 01:23 PM']Sooooo....consider "adopting" a pristine "late" 964 because the "red headed stepchildren" of the air-cooled 911s (e.g., 964s), are cheap, cheap, cheap (and ripe-for-the-picking!!!).

What's considered pristine wrt mileage for the 964? Looks like they are around $25K up.

I concur. I have a friend who has one, a cabrio. I find it to be a refined comfortable drive with great performance. The prices are in the same range as my 968 was when I bought it in 1996.

Everytime Excellence does a piece on an older "outlaw" 911 I think to myself what treat a lightened, pumped-up "outlaw" cabrio would be to drive.

If anybody would like me to take a look and arrange a "real" PPI, send me a PM.

Before buying the last 968 I looked at and drove several 964s and 993s and figured out that in the last 20 years I had gotten to the point that I hated the driving position in the 911. Bought another 968. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

yup - that coupled with the commonness of the 964, and the overall lack of connection i want in a car ruled it out for me - it felt like i was having a wresting match and pushing a box, rather than the extension of myself i feel with the 968

i don't like the looks much either

clearly i am in the minority

as a year round car i think i made the right decision buying a E46 convertible. My reqirements were four seats, three pedals, ragtop. getting in and out of a 944 in a suit is a PITA, much easier in the BMW. same for getting my daughter in the back.

for a weekend toy I want/wanted an elise to replace my S2 but cant get a set of tires in teh back and dont want to deal with the neighbors and a tire trailer. so now i have to look at 964 coupes.

that is exactly the reasoning behind our choice of the E46 M3 convertible, recently moving up from the E46 325 convertible we had since 02 - both are manual transmissions though - wouldn't give that up - needed practicality

the 968 is purely toy for us
