For those of you who may not have read the e-mail, Don Hassenbein resigned today as Advocate of the 968 register.
I first met Don in Sterling, Va. at the 2005 968 Celebration, the first celebration that Don did not organize (After the first 4 the model was well established and the bar set high). I was so inspired by Don's enthusiasm that I, along with Pete, decided to host the 968 Celebration in Newtown in 2006. Don has worked tirelessly to make the 968 Register grow and to foster positive support for the 968 community at all times....those who have some history in PCA and the Register know how much I endorsed Don's position as Advocate. We wish you Godspeed and best in all of your endeavors...and we hope that you will take some time from your many activities to spend some time here now and again.
Jeff Coe, Register Co-advocate, will fill the duties in the meantime. We support your election and offer you our support. You have been fair-minded and a friend to all 968ers, always above the fray. Best of luck in your new role.
Regards,
Jay
For the record I attach the contents of Don's resignation, very eloquent words from a true gentleman:
June 2, 2008,
Dear Fellow 968 Register members,
I have enjoyed serving as the 968 Register Advocate for the last 2 years and Co Advocate for the previous 4 years. Prior to that, I was a 968 Register member for 2 years. It has been very rewarding to see our 968 Register grow from 36 in 2002 to over 240 members during this time. I understand from John Straub, PCA National Register Coordinator, that we are among the largest of his 25 Registers.
As you may know, I am a retired International Telecommunications Executive (since end of 1999) who loves Porsche 968s. That passion led me to organize 6 annual 968 events in Hershey (starting in 2001). Recently, I was elected President of a our Homeowner Association and the other Officers and I have made some great strides in resolving many existing problems, but still have lots of work to do. Since 2006, I have become a part time Dad ("Opa" in German to the kids) to our 2 grandchildren (Mom Lisa, Katrina 2 1/2 and Lance 5) who live with us and whom I love very much. At this point in my life I have "overvolunteered" and must decide where I want to spend my time. I have decided that family (especially my wife of 47 years, Elke) comes first.
Therefore, I am submitting my resignation as PCA 968 Register Advocate effective today. I have norminated Jeff Coe, the current Co Advocate, as my replacement. For those of you that have met Jeff, you know he is a 968 affeciando and is a real expert on the car. Jeff has served as Co Advocate for the last 2 years and has served as 968 Register Historian since Dennis Wheary and Dick Petticrew started the 968 Register in 1998.
Until Jeff selects his nominee for the Co Advocate position and is officially named Advocate, he will be filling both positions. Ron Salvador has agreed to continue on as Webmeister and has done an incredible job. It is expected that John Straub will be making an official announcement on the Advocate and Co Advocate positions within the next few weeks. I want to also thank Dan Dennison for stepping in and taking over as the 968 Celebration at Escape Co Chairman (Jeff will now become Co Chair with Dan) and James Blackwell for volunteering to serve as Tour Guide for Tour J - 968s only at Escape - it should be a great Caravan!
I will be assisting Jeff in making the transition over the next few weeks and will continue on as an active member of the 968 Register. I want to personally thank John Straub for his advice, counsel and support (he makes a great Wash-n-Shine Judge) during the last six years, Jeff and Ron Salvador, our Webmeister, for making my term as Advocate a successful one. I owe a debt of gratitude to Tom Charlesworth, National Technical Committee Chairman for presenting Tech Session presentations at most of our 968 Celebration (he is scheduled to do another at our Celebration in September. Also, thanks to all of you for attending and making our numerous 968 events over the years very enjoyable and successful. I look forward to seeing you again at future 968 Register events.
With warm regards,
