When cold the top end of the motor (near the air inlet) I hear a consistant very fast tick (click) is this an indicator of?? Belts & pads where chaged at 100K,

118K on the clock now.

Seesm to quite down after the car gets up to temp. It's about 45Degrees out now when starting.

I'm new to the car and the board, is this the cam gears?

Thanks for any direction....

Sounds like the dreaded cracked oil pickup tube.

I'm sure that there are many more experienced people on this forum who can answer this better, but I would suggest that it might be lifters, especially if the noise goes away when the engine is warm.

What other symptoms would you get if the oil pickup tube is cracked?

Sounds more like the hydraulic valve lifters to me too. If it were a cracked oil pickup tube I don't think the noise would go away when the engine got warm. With lifters that have "leaked down" that is typical of the result when they warm up and get more oil into them. Have it checked by a shop and see for sure. good luck, Bob Blackwell.

When my engine made that noise I changed the oil, but substituted 1 quart of oil with marvel mystery oil. Within 100 miles the noise was gone. That stuff works great for noisy lifters.
