I let my motor trend and car & driver subscriptions run out about 3 months ago. I now get the "we want you back" offers twice a month. Today the offer is for MT and a years subscription is now down to $10. That will be dropped to $6 if I sign on for 3 years. which is the cost of 1 issue from a news stand.
How cheap do these offers get?

The advertisers are paying for it -- it is an advertising war out there, anything to acquire a pair of eyes. A brand is much more valuable than a quality product, the highest quality products are often not a prominent brand, because they aren't advertised. Besides, we here may be an exception, but I figure "car guys" are not the highest Internet users. So auto industries can't really adopt new Internet based strategies, these vendors must retain their promotion in magazines. Besides, if I wanted my car evaluated by the Car and Driver staff, I sure would be buying advertising in their magazine, in addition to giving them test cars and long term evaluation cars. It will never go to zero $ for the subscription, since they have to make sure the reader has some skin in the game, this ensures focused marketing. (my theories anyway)

I want to try the Automobile mag. I remember when they first went into print back in the mid 80s. I think they stop printing for a while and is now back.

True. Sales must be pretty slow compared to where they were say 10 years ago.
However, I still like to have a physical mag when it’s an article I'm particularly interested in.
Advantages to the printed copy -
Taking the mag on a plane, bus, metro, to a doctors office and even umm having it red flagged.
Archiving it for quick retrieval years later when the then "new model" is forgotten.
Some mags have DIY and how to's that are best accessed right next to your project for quick reference.
But for quick updates on the GT2 or LFA I, like Pat, would rather point and click.

Now if I could figure out what to do with Roland's pile of mid '90s mags
Hey Joe, those mags were for Mike to select his first car -- you know, something he loves and you can pay for the repairs and upgrades
Next I'll drop off my collection of Cruising World and Sailing magazines. I figure you could appreciate a hole in the water into which you can throw money. It stinks, been boatless for over 5 years now, I decided kids college was more relevant than my urge to run away. Ah the silly decisions we make.
