Changes in Latitude (but not in atitude)
#1

We have sold our house in Alameda and are headed to Oregon. We are hoping to settle in the area around Newburg. For those of you who don't know Oregon, Newburg is close to the Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, Yamhill-Carlton AVA's where some of the Best Pinot Noirs are produced.

We will probably rent for a period of time to determine if this is where we would like to live longterm. Jobs in the wine industry seem to be plentiful, so we'll see whether that works for a 71 year old winemaker.

The 968 has been undergoing some mechanical and cosmetic work after spending a year in storage while we renovated our house, inside and out. I think it was worth the effort, the house sold in 5 days for more than 10% above asking price.

The hardest part of this whole relocation is loosing my daily connection with Longevity Wines where I have worked for the past 11 years. In the past two years Longevity as bloomed into one of the best small wineries in Livermore. Those of you who live in the Bay Area, consider tasting in Livermore, you'll not be disappointed. There are several wineries within a two minute walk of Longevity: Occasio, Nottingham, McKahn Family Wines, Rhonda Wood, Embodied Wines, Vasco Urbano, and Altamont Beer Works.

IMO , Oregon is probably the best choice state if you must move from CA. Except the weather, but you’d have to make that compromise in all the other 49 states , so it may as well be Oregon. !

Congrats, and welcome to Oregon.

Some amazing drives in and around Newberg. Check out the Washington County scenic loop. Nothing better on a warm summer evening.  Big Grin

Friday is fine. The Glen motor inn is no longer open. So we need to find a new venue. By any chance, and I know this is probably a crazy question, do you like Thai food?
Sorry for this I thought I was responding to an message.

Congratulations, I'm happy for you and a bit jealous...this is definitely one of my favorite places on Earth. There are so many opportunities in the wine market that you will most assuredly find something that will challenge your talents.

Good luck!

Jay

My wife is still unsure about whether the Oregon weather will work for her. The plan is to give it a try for a while and if it doesn't work out our other alternative is Santa Fe NM. There is a small number of wineries in New Mexico. Among those is Gruet, which specializes in sparkling wine. I've tasted their wines and I really like them. One interesting fact is that they have established partnerships with some of the Pueblo communities in the Rio Grande Valley to plant vineyards and grow wine grapes. The winery planted the vineyards and has been teaching the community the viticultural skills necessary to produce quality wine grapes and the winery will pay for the crop.

There is a program at our local college in Prescott, have their own vineyards; maybe we could start calling you "Professor"?

I'll visit their tasting room when I'm in Santa Fe in June. My daughter is having problems with her vines, but probably the soil conditions where she is in SFe. Still an immature industry there, could use an experienced hand.

BTW, the locals call the town "FantaSe".

We have rented a house in Lake Oswego and I am beginning the search for a position in the wine industry. I'm starting by establishing a network amongst the growers and producers. I've already received some tips and recommendations on who to talk to from members of this forum and others .

The farm to table scene here is as good as anything you'll find in California. The abundance of farmers markets and farmsteads in the Willamette Vally is astounding.

The only downside so far has been the difficulty we encountered in finding a place to rent. Rents are very tight and not inexpensive in the great Portland area.

I'll be bringing the 968 up from California sometime in August. Any recommendations for a good Porsche shop in the Portland area would be appreciated.

Someday, we will need to consider a west coast gathering in the Willamette Valley. I would be more than worth the drive for you California members.

Welcome to town!

A&P in East Portland or Marque Motors in SW Portland are the two indy shops I would suggest.

At least 3 968 owners around here use A&P and Alan and Paul are super friendly and accessible. Alan pulled my valve cover to troubleshoot a noise a few weeks ago and replaced it with new gaskets at no cost. It would be a little drive for you but they are solid and Alan was factory trained in the early 70s so he knows his way around a Porsche.

Sunset Porsche had a transaxle specialist last year, not sure if they're still on board. As you probably know they are THE source for dealer parts. They can get everything.

FYI two car events coming up - Forest Grove Concours which is AWESOME July 21st and Cars in the Park by the Portland Art Museum tomorrow 7/14.
