My 968 has on occasion stalled while driving at 70 mph. It just goes quiet. Sometimes it restarts and other times I coast over to the side of the expressway, wait, and then it will restart.

Battery seems strong, alternator charging at 14.

Yesterday replaced the plug wires and I went to car wash. After exiting the car wash stalled at the 1st stp[ light and 1 mile later another light. Only this time it took about 5 minutes before it started.

I am scheduled to leave Monday from Chicago area and drive to Denver to pick up my son.

Any help would be appreciated. Is the car okay to take on a long trip? It is about 400 miles between dealers if I need help.

DME relay - mine did this immediately after i picked up the car - about every 6 hours or so, on the drive home from cleveland to los angeles, it would just konk out - everything would go dead on the dash - i thought i had made a huge mistake in buying the car sight unseen over ebay

$25 and it was fixed

My DME problems occurred only at engine start, I'd have to wait between cranks before it would turn over. It would happen when the engine was cold and also when it was hot. At times I could go weeks without it happening. No rhyme or reason.

Judging by the hit and miss nature of your problem I would also recommend starting with the DME relay. Even if your wrong its good to have an extra and its no big expense.

Just curious, does this happen when the fuel tank is 1/2 or less full? If the relay doesn't cure the issue and it stalls again, there may be a problem with the fuel vapor system. Does air rush in when the fuel filler cap is opened? Or there may be an intermittent electrical connection to the pump.

Thanks. It has happened as you describe, but yesterday, 3 x's when the tank was fuel. In the middle of Nebraska at moment, hope to make Denver today.

So far I have driven 700 miles, in middle of Nebraska. Hope to make Denver today and will buy new DME relay.
It stalled once Tuesday, and 3 times yesterday.

Starts fine. Only when I am driving. Yesterday, it didn't happen until about 5 hours of driving and then 3 times.

This happened to my 1985.5 944
Turned out to be an ECU problem, hairline crack.
So it would just shut off without any prediction.
I had to replace the ECU.

Sorry I didn't check in earlier. Bought one from Porsche dealer at about 2 1/2 times what it should cost.
