That is a good idea Rap.  Sounds like we are both among the strongest supporters of the freedoms provided by the American way who believe individuals should be allowed to do whatever they wish (as long as they don't harm others).

Not to start a political debate, but Ca’s emissions standards were just ordered by the Trump admin to be rolled back and they can no longer exceed / be stricter than the Federal emissions parameters, as they have been since 1975 . Ca of course is immediately filing a lawsuit , ( ha, join the line of several dozens of other lawsuits against the admin ) but any battle of this magnitude will take years and years and most likely will end up with “ the supremes “ . In the meantime , what happens with our smog checks - every car passes because the thresholds are much lower, so the smog check is nothimg more than yet another income generating tax the state collects ? Or no smog checks at all ? ( yeah, right ..) Or will we get all a $ 0.75 a gallon reduction at the pump because CA no longer needs the extra clean gas to be produced ? ( another yeah right ,,) Will it cause a major decline in electric car sales ? Will Los Angeles skies once again be brown ? But arguably more important than anything else , will we no longer need to worry about the NLA catalytic converter for the 968 , if ours goes bad ?

Interstate commerce is national. We the people did not elect the governor of Ca. to make decisions influencing our lives. Congress should do its job.(yea right) The continual refusal not inability of Congress to pass legislation is the root of many of our problems. If congress passed legislation that mirrored Ca. then so be it. The only thing a politician is good for is raising money to run for re-election.

So what’s the conventional wisdom here in terms of preparation for a smog test with a car which hasn’t been driven for about six months ?   I recall the secondary air system may not be ready yet if you simply drive it from home to the test station five minutes away , and it may require putting the car through its paces for about half an hour of driving at various speeds, distances, a couple of off and on cycles ..etc  before the test  ( the computer will pick up the not ready status,  even without any CEL instrument alert ) , but wondering if I should really heat up the catalytic converter with an extended time driving at high rpms , also ?    Thoughts, suggestions  ?

Funny you mention this. 

 

I had not driven my car for almost 3 years when I finally got it fixed about a month ago. Put in new gas, a can of techron and figured I would get the test, fail and use the free re-test to fix whatever was wrong.

 

I passed no problem. Wasn't even close on a couple. I would drive a bit, new gas and techron and give it a go...you might be surprised.

Cool.   I was planning to take it out for a spirited run before that test anyway ..it’s been way too long.  Even if not needed it’s a  perfect excuse to have some long overdue fun .

I always worry when I have to smog my 968, and it's always great, as long as it's good and hot. Time before last we couldn't get the machine to work properly as the smog machine tach was not reading what the interior tach said, and it was off by a lot. Turns out the tech had it set for a rotary motor, and apparently 3 cylinder 3 stroke engines calculate RPM's differently than Porsche intended.

Here in France the road test, including emissions, is a biannual thing. Test before last the guy gave me a "free pass" because I didn't drive much and promised I wasn't going to sell (before selling a test is also necessary) ... last time the day before the test I had the system washed through for 20 mins with hydrogen (I think, but will check) which cleans the cat etc, and past the tests no problems.

Or any other vendor, doing a compression test on a rotary is fun as well

These cars run extremely clean ; every prior test produced results far below the allowable thresholds in every category,  so I usually don’t worry too much when the car is driven at least once a week or so .. but sitting for so long I just assume a bunch of impurities build up in there that need to be “ blown out “  in a good run , as well as the previously mentioned secondary air system readiness,.

 

Amd same question the the hydrogen flush ..??  Huh

"The effects of injecting hydrogen into your engine makes it possible to raise the combustion temperature to trigger pyrolysis combustion, a chemical reaction that vaporises, and eliminates carbon deposits. We simply insert a tube from our detox machine into the air intake duct of an engine and leave the process to run.

The average vehicle takes 30-45 minutes to be cleaned and the results can be seen immediately upon completion. Periodically increasing the revs during the process flushes the loosened carbon deposits which can normally be seen coming out of the exhaust."


Yep it was hydrogen. I'm having trouble finding a scientific paper on this, but if you google "hydrogen cleaning of fuel systems" or "hydrogen cleaning of catalytic converters " you will find an enormous array of adverts for machines and services... so something must be working.


I suspect that many of the claims are ambitious to say the least, but I can confirm my post as above, and the reason I had the process was because my neighbour was failing emissions with his diesel Renault and the dealer was being unhelpful, apart from many offers of expensive solutions! So he found out about this process on the web, located a garage, and an hour later all was good and his vehicle passed the emission test.


So my conclusion is that if your engine is relatively clean and regularly used with clean fuel then this process is possibly not going to make much differences from any, but if you are operating at the dirty end of the scale Big Grin then this process is a "get out of gaol free card".


Finally I add that the Porsche dealer in Oman recommended regular use of injector cleaner etc as he said the fuel available at the pumps was pretty poor quality (what can you expect for 25c a liter?)

Here's the test results ....

 

   

 

The top one is from 2018 and comes in at 2.90% ..... I'm not sure of the parameters infer, NOx or CO2, or particulates.  Then after very little driving, and that is around country roads and not up the motorway, the 2020 result improved to 2.65% after the hydrogen flush.

 

I think the science is that the hydrogen is pulsed into the intake (the mechanic lifted the airbox lid and poked in the "hydrogen nozzle") which increases the percentage of combustible material as well as creating a mixture that burns hotter and cleaner.  I looked up <b>Pyrolysis, </b>it is the thermal decomposition of materials at elevated temperatures in an inert atmosphere"

 

I suspect some can do the same by heading off onto a motorway in 3rd gear on cruise control .... running as hot as possible with no extra fuel added, as happens with braking and then acceleration.  Unfortunately I have to drive quite a way to a motorway .... and then of course I have to get home again along country once I've left the motorway again.

 

So there it is ...Hydrogen flushing ... believe what you will.  As said, I suspect some of the claims are outrageous, certainly those suggesting it's like a decoke for your engine, but for the cat I can report success based on anecdotal research Smile

Totally agree. I live on the main road (!) that runs through our village, the approaching roads are windy and popular with bikies, every Sunday we are subject to troupes (the ape hanger double entendre is intended) rolling through, shaking the hell out of the place.


One of the things I really like about our 968s is that they are gentle giants .... we can tiptoe through a village, no disturbance at all, but then the car screams into life out on the open road, it's a lovely transformation Smile
