Cab top questions
#1

1) Is there a way to bypass the circuit that keeps the top from operating when the engine's running? It's annoying. (I note the 986 doesn't do this.)

2) Is there any sort of maintenance I should be performing -- grease/lubrication anywhere, etc.?

Re: 1 There are some good threads on modifying one of the relay contacts to enable the top to operate with the engine running, but I'll be damned if I can find it. The fix is simple. You need to put tape on the correct terminal of the relay to insulate it and prevent an electrical connection. I was going to post the URL for you, but you'll have to do your own search. I first searched this site, and can't find anything. If it is found, it should probably be moved to the topic area call "Posts that every 968 owner should read". Send a PM to Eric when you find it.

I searched on "convertible", "cab top" and one or two other variations, but couldn't find the posts. I think there is at least one topic, maybe two, with quite a few messages and some real valuable info.

I also searched the 968.net site, but could not find it. IIRC, the thread was started sometime in early 2005, so it wasn't that long ago.

There is one item of maintenance that my Porsche mechanic recommended for all 968 cab tops. Because they're raised and lowered by two motors, any time those get out of synch, and one side lowers faster than the other, you get the dreaded breakage of the bow.

To prevent this, he recommended removing the covers where the top is bolted to the car on either side and tightening the bolts. Glad I did...one side was really loose. He also mentioned that some cable shrinkage with age can cause one side to lower at a different rate as well, but that this isn't so common.

As always, the best advice is to watch and listen every time you raise or lower the top. If you hear or see anything unusual, stop. There should be several posts on this if you do a search.

I just pulled G21 and bent the thin #6 copper lug over, covered it with a short piece of heat shrink. Now the top goes up and down with the motor running! Thanks guys!
