Cabriolet hardtop
#41

QUOTE (flash @ Aug 30 2009, 08:04 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>lol - perhaps - i've never been a fan of mickey-mousing stuff - i've always felt that if you can't afford to take care of a car properly, you should not have that car - many of the 944 guys mickey mouse things, and as the 968 becomes less and less expensive to buy, that tendency is creeping in here, as we get more owners who really can't afford the car - sad but true - i hear things like "take a sanding disk to the flywheel" instead of having it surfaced, and i just cringe - i've been broke too, but when i was, i either sold the car i couldn't maintain, or i parked it and drove one i could, or i took the bus - i didn't rubber band and bubble gum things - times are hard - we all know that - this does not mean we have to lower the overall standard of a car that deserves better - i've always said that the 968 is not a good choice as a daily driver, and should never be considered as inexpensive to operate - as they age and rack up miles, this becomes even more evident - as a result of those repairs, it also means less disposable cash for toys - as the prices drop, it also means that such accessories represent a much larger proportional investment, thereby decreasing the interest level

something to remember though: no cheap sports car is good and no good sportscar is cheap

regarding the removable hard top project, i can wait until people with money want the thing - if and when enough people get serious, i'll pursue this - i think that ship may have sailed years ago though

as for buying a hardtop car, no thanks - i don't like hatchbacks or fastbacks (with maybe 2 exceptions) - its' not so much an expense thing as a priority thing for me - i like the lines of the cab - if i were to do anything, it would be cab lines - however, as i never drive in the rain, and the car has only gotten caught in it 7 times now in its entire life, i don't think much about it
Well, Flash....this post has lost it's initial enthusiasm.....something it appears you're very familiar with. I compliment your appreciation for the concept, though. This winter, I think I'll put together a full-scale model and shoot some pictures. Maybe we can still drum up additional interest later. Thanks for your interesting and insightful input.

Bob,

If you're still mulling this hardtop idea over you can count me in as one more who will pony up for it. I was looking for a post I read not long ago about adjusting my top along the windscreen and thinking how great it would be to have a hardtop as on my Boxster when I stumbled on this year old thread. Do I make three?

I was thinking the same thing! I saw an old Miata this weekend with the hardtop on. It sure would have been nice if Porsche had designed such a beast when they first came out with the 968. Of course, it would have been a $12,000 option.

Had the 968 been wildly successful, then the factory just might have made an OEM hardtop. I believe, if my memory serves me, Porsche made a factory hardtop for the 993. Apparently it is a rare as hen's teeth.

The problem I see with a removable hardtop is just the general logistics of storage and install/removal. I remember I had a 1990 Nissan pickup and I bought a cap for it. I ended up never taking the cap off in the warmer months because I had no real storage area and it was a bit of a pain and certainly damn near impossible for one person to do it and not damage something. A hardtop for the 968 should weigh a lot less, but would probably still be *cumbersome*... Would still like to see one though, complete with a rear window defroster!!!!

while they are nice if you leave it on, as bio says, they are a royal pain in the butt to deal with - you can't lift it off by yourself without rigging in your garage - if it's nice out and you want to take it off, your'e stuck until you get home - they are heavy - they tend to rattle - if you really want it right, you need to add a rear window defroster, which for us would mean more wiring

i think the solution would be a targa top

I had a hardtop for the Miata, it never left the garage...Melva couldn't wait to get rid of it 'cause she always hit her head on it.

yup - i had a couple of them for the MGBs too - real pain in the butt - the targa i had though wasn't bad - the design was poor, and the rear hoop stood up over the windshield height, so it made a racket and was a huge wind scoop, but functionally it was pretty cool - when i wanted it open i just removed the 2 halves of the center section and tossed them in the boot

I love my Targa......

....oops, wrong forum! Engine at other end and missing radiator/water pump.

Ah, but seriously, I always wanted a hardtop when I had my Miata, but then later on, realized what a pain to take on and off, and compared to others, the Miata is pretty easy. I figured it would only be on and off twice per year however, so it wouldn't be that bad.

I love the lines of the 968 Cabriolet and would have to see something before I'd give it my blessing. If it could be done to retain a similar shape of the ragtop when raised, then maybe. Probably price prohibitive though.

there is no reason it would not mirror the lines of the cab top

pricing is almost certainly prohibitive - i can't see anything decent being done for under $2.5k

I have one on my Boxster and a simple pulley in the garage to lift it off. It's not that difficult to do by myself, but I end up leaving the hard top on most of the time and leave the top down on the 968 all the time. I put it up this weekend to wash and wax and it no longer latches properly since the last time it was up, July 4th. Flash is right though, even the factory Boxster Htop rattles on a bumpy road
