Question/Advice on Cab Top
#1

Yesterday my wife called and said the Cab top wouldn't go down. This morning I planned to convert it to manual, something I knew I would probably have to do someday or go to the expense of a repair. When operating the switch the motor just whirred lke it was disengaged. I first removed the relay in G21. Now the motor made no noise at all, but just to be sure I had actuallly removed the correct relay I plugged it back in and now the top magically goes up and down again perfectly. In my line of work I have a saying for things I can't explain, "unexplainable phenomena of modern telephony", which is basically just a power cycle, reboot etc that fixes some issue that makes no sense. Is that what I have here or is there some explanation for why this could happen? Am I just on the verge of having to go manual or just in some weird state that removing the relay corrected? This is the first time I've had any problem with the power mechanism, but I do have problems with alignment and closing, plus it rattles like crazy when closed. I'm fairly sure the top bar is probably bent warped or something and not lining up well. Any ideas appreciated.

it sounds like you have a catastrophic problem looming in the wings. this whole dual motor thing is a nightmare.

i would put it in manual mode immediately. it is very simple and will take less than 5 minutes.

I would reccomend finding a good top shop and having them re-align (sync) the motors and gin the whole works...to avaioid a catastrophic failure...

MANUAL MODE!! But, yes, I'd probably want to have it fixed properly just for peace of mind and then still go to manual mode. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I'll put it manual today. I have to take it to stealer to have the windshield replaced. I can't get anyone else In Atlanta to do it, so I may break down and have them realign the top. I've read through the top manual and just don't have the connfidence I can make it better without a huge risk of making it worse.

I totaled my M3 last Monday so the 968 is getting some much needed miles. I put the 17 inch cups back on it. The 18s look better IMO, but the 17s ride smooth as silk for a Porsche. I have agreed value insurance on the 968 so i can't drive it to work as part of the policy restrictions. I can't decide whether to look for another M3 or not. I had a 2003 with 45k miles and they gave me 23k for it. I only paid 22500 four years ago, so I came out better than I deserved. E46s must have been down in value at the time or I just stole it. What else out there is fun to drive but has a trunk and a back seat that is usable? I have to have something for trips with the wife.
