CAB TOP MOTOR QUESTION
#1

I just had to have my second main bow repaired. It turned out nice and I reinstalled it. I tightened up the bolts on the side motors ( Porsche calls them transmissions) and the top seemed to work fine. However, there seemed to be slight hiccup in the driver side motor, so I loosened the bolts. I turned on the motor and they seemed to spin around okay inside. When I re-tightened the bolts, the gears would not engage and just seem to spin around inside. I think the cables from the rear motors are fine, as they do seem to turn around inside the main "transmission."

I looked up the parts in the "Katalog." The unit has a main transmission and a "planetary" transmission which attaches to the cables. I think that these two transmissions are not engaging. My mechanic says that the cables need to be stretched somewhat so that they will mesh properly.

Does anyone have any experience with this? If I take out or take apart the "transmission" will I be able to synch the gears from the inside or the other side? Unfortunately there is nothing in the workshop or cab manuals about adjusting these gears.

Thanks in advance.

Jeff,

The transmissions drive a pulley which 'grips' the cable; if the cable tension is removed, the pulley will turn against the 'slack' cable but not grip the cable. The motor will run but there will be no load. The gears are all still engaged and the pulley is turning; it's the cable that is not moving. Adjusting the cable tension so that the pulley will grip the cable is what is needed. Gear to gear drive trains are normally not adjustable. Now, adjusting cable tension is similar to adjusting belt tension; as much art as science.
