Expanded Metal Lower Grill
#21

personal preference aside, and the tight mesh just bugs me, looking way too blingy, i think i need a closer shot of the material - i haven't tested what the minimum percentage of open area needs to be on this car, but i can tell you that there was a noticeable improvement at road speed between the stock grille and the one i got from dave

but, since that is no longer available..........

To all concerned I'm not out to make money on these, the stainless is too expensive I was just looking for a good alternative to the stock plastic grill for myself and this is what i came up with. There is several advantages to this material, it is very durable and doesn't bend but flexes with the bumper if you run up a curb or hit a cone . I live in central oregon where they sand the roads with lava rock so I was looking for something tight enough to keep the stuff out of the radiator and still have good air flow.

There aren't many options out there for us and the look might not be for everyone but for those of us

looking to do a little auto x and daily driving it works just fine. I,m a firm believer of function before

fashion and wasn't looking for Bling!!! Just something tough and durable and functional.

oh absolutely - i think everybody knows there is no money in 968 mod parts - i like the extra rigidity, as i have deformed my grilles a number of times - plenty of people like that look, so what i think makes no difference - i tend to like the invisible grille look, and would not have a grille at all but for the need to catch bugs and stuff before they get into things i don't want them into, so this is the wrong direction for me, but maybe black would work, if it didn't also take up more open area

as i said though, i am more interested in function than form, my personal opinion of what i think it looks like is irrelevant, and my only question was about open area - any chance of a pic showing dimension?

Hope you didn't take that wrong I love the criticism it makes me think a little harder on improving

stuff, as we speak I have a new sample on the way, much more open. The material is 0.0630-6 mesh per inch. If i remember right the open area is somewhere between 65 and 70%.

the sample coming is 4 mesh, as you might know finding stuff like tis is tough, mostly non stock iems

and if your lucky they might have something in the boneyard. This stuff should be around 80%.

And yes photos make it look much tighter because of the thickness of the wire, here's one in black <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

As I am looking for the 968 Engineering mouth grille which uses 20 guage oval perforated aluminium either in the clearcoat aluminium or black finish it would be great if anyone on this Forum with one of these is considering upgrading to a different type , then I would be interested in purchasing their old one if still in good condition. Keep me posted .

Cheers Shaun.

I purchased Doug Fosters Grill. Satin Black...looks excellent.

Personally, i dont like Mesh grills ( for the most part, i think they look ricey), but i purchased it for function, not form. To my surprise...i like the way it looks.

I have Dave's upper and lower grills in brushed aluminum that I purchased for my previous white 968 and never got around to installing. Now that I have a black 968 I wonder about whether I should install them as-is, or paint them black. Any opinion, or Photo-Shop experts that can make me a picture?

I have the upper installed on my black car, but don't have access to the car until tomorrow.

I plan on painting my lower grill with a bedliner type of coating prior to install. I like the upper, but I don't think that much silver would look right below.

YMMV

If you go to Dave's wbsite he still has a picture of my black coupe with upper and lower grills - look under the lower grill for the picture...

I installed a new factory plastic lower grill about 3-1/2 years ago. After that amount of time, and more than 75k miles, it is still perfect. So, they can last.

Hi Folks,

Didn't see any current info on alternatives to the stock lower grille. Does anyone have any updates, else I'll go with the stock. Thanks

Thanks Kevin,

I actually did go to the web site (http://www.968engineering.com/lowergrill.html) , and saw it available before my message -- however silly me, I figured it was an obsolete web site entry --- so I wrote him email just now and hopefully it is available. I expect it is less than the OEM piece.

I just checked, and the oem lower grill goes for $116 list. Lot of money for a piece of plastic. Although I did find one for $92

new!

Kevin,

1. I just got email back from Dave and he says yes, he is taking order through July, and then making a batch.

2. How did you check the OEM price so quickly, did you call Sunset, or is there some online method I am not aware of? And what was the other source for the $92?

Thanks!

if you are creative you can make your own:

this is one of a hundred places that sells stainless mesh. not hard to fashion, and you can choose you hole size and wire diameter. hardest part is keeping the edges intact.

I found a Porsche parts distributor that sells oe parts at a reasonable price. For instance new OE motor mounts for $126 each. But I never did check with Sunset. I'll get the websight to you when I get home.
