Broken Main Bows - what would you do?
#1

I need some advice on my 944 cab. I'm posting this on here because I'm told that the 944 top is pretty much identical to a 968 top and you guys seem very knowledgeable.

I took my car into a local shop to have a new top put on. To make a long story as short as possible they broke BOTH of my main bows while installing the new top. The shop welded the parts and converted the top from power to manual. Now I no longer have a power top and I'm also worried that the welds will not hold. What would you do? I feel like the shop should do what it takes to get my top working (power, not manual). I feel like it was their fault that the bows broke since they were working on the top when they broke.

it is identical

as for liability of the shop, you will have an uphill battle proving it, and will likely end up in court seeking relief if the shop won't stand up and take responsibility on their own

most of us have switched to manual, due to the nature of the poor design and the frequency of these thing doing exactly this

regarding the welds, it is very thin metal, requiring a very skilled welder, and if they did not also add reinforcing, they will most likely break again, taking the top with it

if both bows are broken, i would absolutely replace the frame - one break of one bow is one thing, but more than that and you are asking for trouble

a couple of people have had the bow welded, and not had it fail. however, it was not just a simple weld job. reinforcement was added. most of the weld jobs though have failed.

i have been told by the one guy here that says he can do it, that the top must be removed from the frame to do the job. at that point, unless it is less than 3 years old, you should replace the top. the canvas rots from exposure to the sun, and does not like to be put back together.

tech tip: a quick way to tell the condition of your top is to lift up the flap at the side vent and look at the stitching. it is black, as it should be all over the top. if the stitching is faded to another color, and especially if any of the stitches across the bows have popped, your top needs to be replaced.

no, it does not. i had that done custom. i think the glitch is going to be that the shop that will do the bows, is not the same shop that would do the zipper.
