Redline Gear Lube MT-90 vs NS
#1

I may have bought the wrong Redline Gear Lube for my 968 6-speed without LSD. I picked up 4 quarts of MT-90 vs the 75W90NS stuff which apparently is recommended. In other words, MT-90 is for GL1, GL3, and GL4 transaxles while 75W90NS apparently is recommended cars w/o LSD (GL5). What's the the problem with using MT-90 in a non-LSD trans? I can't buy Redline locally so I may have to order some in to get the right stuff?

The issue with the MT-90 is not with the LSD, but more importantly it does not meet the API GL5 gear oil spec which is required for the 968 gearbox. GL5 oils provide more wear protection than GL4.

The NS series of Redline oils are formulated to do two things: 1. Provide faster synchro engagement in transaxles and 2. Allow clutch type LSD's to lock up earlier. The NS oils are also GL5 compliant so they are a good choice for the 968 regardless if you have LSD or not.

Other gear oils that meet GL5 are also OK to use too.

Bottom line is, don't use the MT-90.
