Brake "dust" residue cleaner
#1

My Cayenne GTS has the red calipers. Although they look good from afar there is a lot of really baked-on brake dust residue on parts of the calipers that you don't see as much - the backs, for example. Can anyone here recommend a good product to help clean this off? Normal brake cleaner doesn't help much.

I had the same issue with my 968. The red calipers became dingy over time, and nothing I tried would clean of the baked-on dust. The only thing that worked was a drill-mounted wire brush. Since I was repainting them anyway, I didn't care if I scratched the existing paint, but maybe a softer, e.g. nylon brush would clean them up without doing too much damage to the paint. Once you either get them clean, or repaint them (which isn't too difficult - the two-stage brush-on paints they sell these days work really well), it's a really good idea to wipe them of every time you wash the car to prevent the dust from re-accumulating. Good luck - the guys on Car Talk used to refer to brake dust as the scourge of the 20th century!

The dust is iron particles that were red hot when the hit the paint, you need a clear that dissolves these things,

Not sure what can buy in the USA for this,

I use stuff called Iron Out

Just Google iron particle remover

I used some stuff on some track wheels that turned purple when it was disolving the iron. It worked pretty well, but it took several applications and it didn't get some of the thicker residue. I bought it at the local parts store, but I can't recall the name.

Griot's makes Iron Fall Out Remover....also turns purple. Smells like vomit but it is effective at removing brake dust; at least on wheels.

I was able to order the vomit stuff on Amazon. I will let you know how it worked.

I expect it will work fine. Like I posted, for regular applications it worked great, but these were track wheels that had been criminally neglected, with track day after track day of dust baked on in layers than only a paleontologist could fully appreciate.

Rim Wax, Wheel Wax, and Wheel Guard are also good products that keep brake dust from sticking, in case your schedule allows for things like waxing your wheels.

Rejex is great stuff for keeping your wheels from getting dirty. I'll have to get some of that Griots stuff to get the brake crud off insides and the brake parts.

I’ve also found that waxing your wheels makes it easier to clean them. Washing them when you get home from the track seems to also help!

"in case your schedule allows for things like waxing your wheels".

Last time I tried that on the Cayenne I got two off, wrenched my back taking off the 3rd one and ended up with sciatica that lasted 6 weeks. But I always did it before that on the 968s - big difference in weight of the wheels. But I will try a more "controlled" removal on the GTS. Big Grin I really want to get some of that residue off the red calipers if I can.

BTW, it was Mick Jagger's 75th birthday on July 26 - I really hope that some of you celebrated that!

I lower the lift and sit on a stool listening to Stones while I clean them. I saw a guy at the track sitting on a plastic stool taking his tires off. I went out and bought one that I carry with me to events. Seemed like a great idea!

I have no lift, but give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. Archimedes
