Brake Cooling
#1

For those who have replaced their foglights with brake cooling ducts...

Did you remove the 968 air scoops that attach to the A-arms? Or, did you keep them intact? Do the bottom mounted air scoops interfere with the flow of air from the foglight mounted air ducts?

I ask because I removed my 968 air scoops and I recently found that I have to replace my rotors. They are Zimmerman drilled; and the cracks are now connecting the dots, and extending out to the edge of the rotor. The rotors have 9 DE events on them...3-days at VIR, 2-days at Pocono and 4-days at Watkins Glen.

I'm wondering if this is partly due to removing the bottom air scoops and relying only on the new foglight brake cooling ducts...Or, is this just normal wear and tear?

I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure my rotors lasted me almost the entire season last year; and now they definately don't.

Thanks,

Jason

Thanks for the optomistic thoughts!

lol - no worries

as for the cooling, i am contemplating adding cooling ducts, just since i saw those nifty ones with the lights in them, but i thinking i am not going to replace the stock ones, but rather run the hose to the top of the rotor and modify the backing plate - that's what we did on the mgb and it worked great

My charlie arms didn't have provisions for the lower ducts - so I don't have them. I drilled out the backside of the stock upper duct and used that to hold the hose.

9 DE days is a little short on rotor life. Are you running the "big red" front brakes? Have you changed anything else - like type of brake pads? The factory Porsche rotors will last longer than any rotor that was drilled later. If I'm not using a rotor out of a Porsche box, I would go with a slotted rotor instead of drilled. Just because of the premature cracking.

Eric,

Yep, I've got Big Reds up front...using PFC 97 pads up front, too.

For the next go around I've decided to try "Frozen Rotors" OEM drilled. I'll see how they last; and will report back...Hopefully next year; if they last!!

Otherwise, slotted might be worth the experiment also.

Jason,

I am on the second pair of M030 OEM cross-drilled front rotors and will be needing another pair soon as the cracks become bigger. And I have driven about 12000 miles in 2yrs and 4 months of ownership. I have about 20-25 DE days with the first 2 pair and I have had the air scoops attached for the whole time so I think it is just normal when the car is tracked. I have the same rear rotors that came on the car when I bought it and there are no visible cracks. I am using the stock bias valve so most of my braking is on the front wheels. I think it is just part of the cost of doing business (or fun in this case). <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Good luck,

mike
