Metal hood crest
#1

Hi,

I lost my hood badge a few weeks ago while on a driving trip from Tennessee to Michigan. The good news is that my '93 968 performed like a champ during the 900 mile trip from Nashville to Bay Harbor, MI, and was flawless on the return trip as well. I went through a drive-in car wash one day to get some of the grime off my car, and about 200 miles later I noticed that the hood badge was missing. I'm not certain, but I think it was already slightly loose, and came off altogether in the car wash, although I guess it's always possible that it was removed the night before in the hotel parking lot. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Anyway, I ordered a replacement badge from Sunset in Oregon, and I'm not quite sure how it goes on. The package came with the metal hood crest, a thin piece of rubber in the shape of the badge but with a circular cutout in the middle, and two rubber grommets. The grommets have holes on each end for mounting onto the 2 studs on the back of the crest. On one end of the grommets, there is nail-like end which looks like it might be utilized to lock or hold the entire badge in place in the two holes on the hood of the car.

Which side of the rubber sleeve affixes to the badge? One side has a slight indention. And which way do the grommets fit onto the metal studs?

Sorry, I never had a chance to inspect the original badge, and now that it's gone I can't look at it to compare.

Regards,

Hi Rick: You've probably figured it out by now, but here is the quick and dirty on hood crest installation:

The Crest fits into the rubber gasket, with the edge of the gasket surrounding the edge of the crest, underneath, of course. The two "grommets' should actually be zip nuts, with a softish rubber insert and a metal stamped "nut". once the pins on the Crest are inserted thru your hood, the zip nuts are installed with the rubber toward the underside of the hood, and carefully screwed down until just snug. First, take a minute to clean out any wax and dirt residue in the mounting location of the Crest.

Now the tricky Part! The rubber gasket doesn't like to play nice with the Crest, and will try to slip off if you try to fit it on the Crest and then install the Crest. My method is to get two wood toothpicks (preferably the strong round type), put the top of the Crest into the top of the indentation in the gasket, and place the Crest in the holes on the hood, with the hood held up by a padded block of wood to a comfortable operating height. Gently press the Crest against the gasket at the top, and begin working the gasket down each side of the Crest with the toothpick tips, pulling the rubber over the edge of the Crest. You may need to leave one toothpick in one side and work the other side down, and then work the opposite side down toward the base of the Crest, until the gasket fits neatly around the entire Crest. Soaking the Gasket in very hot tap water for a few minutes before installation helps greatly to soften and make the gasket stretchy. Be very careful to not poke thru the gasket with the points of the toothpick and tear it!!!

Once the Gasket is completely surrounding the Crest, you can attach the two zip nuts on the back and gently snug them up with a correct sized socket wrench or even a pair of pliers, if used carefully! Then polish your new Crest with your favorite wax, and stand back to enjoy your handiwork!
